Girls tennis regionals: Okemos, East Lansing, Lansing Catholic, Mason win titles

The Okemos girls tennis team swept the doubles flights and had champions at three singles flights while capturing a Division 1 regional championship at Battle Creek Lakeview on Thursday.

No. 7-ranked Okemos finished with 31 points, while host Battle Creek Lakeview finished as the runner-up with 24 points. Holt was sixth with six points and Grand Ledge followed with three points.

Isabella Portnoy (No. 1), Isabelle Hult (No. 2) and Ruby McKay (No. 3) were singles champions for the Wolves.

Seniors Yasmin Booncharoen-Jelassi and Leila Booncharoen-Jelassi led the strong doubles showing for Okemos by finishing as the champions at No. 1. The teams of Grace Wang and Olive Dalinowski (No. 2), Joanna Deng and Christina Joseph (No. 3) and Bryden Sanders and Sarah Hampton (No. 4) won the other other doubles flights for the Wolves.

DIVISION 2 AT EAST LANSING

East Lansing had champions at three of the four doubles flights while capturing a second straight regional title with 26 points. DeWitt finished as the runner-up and had 23 points.

Emma Mae Baker and Evie Laxton took first at No. 1 doubles to lead East Lansing. The Trojans also had Erika Stokstad and Elsa Elhenicky win at No. 2 doubles and Allison Drzal and Grace Knake place first at No. 4 doubles.

East Lansing also had runner-up finishes from Maia Meghea (No. 1 singles), Ellery Scales (No. 2 singles), Sima Bezuglova (No. 4 singles) and Elena Cull and Elizabeth Gisholt (No. 3 doubles)

DeWitt had a pair of flight champions while taking second at the regional. Courtney Novak placed first at No. 2 singles and Spencer Wood and Madilynn Baldwin were champions at No. 3 doubles.

The Panthers also go runner-up finishes from Maddie Utrup (No. 3 singles) and the doubles teams of Jordyn Crawley and Sydney Thorne (No. 1), Ella Reid and Sydney Peterson (No. 2) and Omi Alicea and Hailey Arens (No. 4).

DIVISION 4 AT JACKSON LUMEN CHRISTI

Lansing Catholic finished with 25 points and finished four ahead of Jackson Lumen Christi while claiming a regional title Wednesday. Lakewood had 14 points at the regional and placed fourth.

The champions for Lansing Catholic were Mariana Prieto at No. 2 singles, Abby Frank at No. 3 singles, Aubrey Bruch at No. 4 singles and the No. 3 doubles teams of Layla Corbit and Kaitlyn Kennedy. Haven Topham and Lauren Escojido were the runner-up at No. 4 doubles for the Cougars, who advance to the state finals at the University of Michigan on May 31-June 1.

Lakewood's Liv Everitt and Abby Pickard were champions at No. 1 doubles, while runners-up for the Vikings included Jasmine Stewart at No. 1 singles and Savanah Mendes and Hayden Bumpes at No. 3 doubles.

DIVISION 3 AT HASLETT

Mason had champions at three of the four doubles flights while capturing its first regional championship since 2005 on Friday. St. Johns finished as the runner-up and host Haslett placed third.

The doubles tandems of Ashlynn Putman and Catherine Ehresman (No. 2), Taylor Price and Lindsey Brown (No. 3) and Isabel Hauser and Anabelle Greenblatt (No. 4) were champions for Mason. Ava Hauser added to the success for the Bulldogs and was the champion at No. 2 singles, while Abby Martel was the runner-up at No. 4 singles.

St. Johns had a pair of singles champions in Isabel Thelen at No. 1 and Lily Howell at No. 3. The Redwings also had three doubles flights finish as runner-ups in Kaylee Woodbury and Ellie Vance (No. 1), Brenda McCann and Ramiah Caroland (No. 2) and Jordan Hicks and Olivia Person (No. 3).

Haslett had a pair of champions while finishing third in Kaia Anastor at No. 4 singles and th No. 1 doubles tandem of Ela Emden and Ganga Murali.
