CENTRAL LAKE – There appears to be no quit in the Onaway Lady Cardinals this season.

Trailing in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals staged a late rally, took control and remained unbeaten on the season with a 63-52 victory at Central Lake in a Ski Valley Conference girls basketball makeup game on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

“Crazy game tonight,” said Onaway coach John George. “We played from behind the whole game, maybe only taking the lead one other time until six minutes left in the fourth quarter, and never looked back. The girls went down nine at one point. The kids commit to the grind for 32 minutes. Defensively, we tried many sets, ultimately settling into a zone that slowed them down.”

The Cardinals (5-0, 4-0 Ski Valley) fell behind 18-9 after the opening quarter of play, but fought back to cut the deficit to two by halftime.

After trimming the lead to one by the end of the third, the Cardinals picked the perfect time to play arguably their best basketball of the contest, outscoring the Trojans by a 14-4 margin and winning the game by 11.

Delivering a strong performance for the Cards was senior Madilyn Crull, who finished with a game-high 20 points, while sophomores Ema DeMaestri and Charlotte Box both reached double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively. Marley Szymoniak and Kailyn George netted seven apiece. Aubrey Benson rounded out Onaway with five.

“Very proud of our girls. Great start for our program,” George said. “Hope to keep it rolling with two tough matchups out of the break with Gaylord St. Mary and (Inland Lakes).”

Onaway heads to Gaylord St. Mary for a Ski Valley Conference clash on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Pellston falls short at home to Harbor Light

PELLSTON – The Pellston girls basketball team put on a decent showing against Harbor Light, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Hornets suffered a 36-28 loss in a non-conference home game on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

“We are finally healthy again and playing games,” said Pellston coach Clayton Irwin. “I am extremely proud of how far they have come in such a short time.”

Lanie Irwin’s 12 points and eight rebounds led the Hornets (1-4), who received seven points and two rebounds from Hailey Davis, four points and two boards from Ella Klungle, and three points and eight boards from Breanna Willis. Sadie Keck scored two points, Scarlet Mang grabbed six rebounds, and Allie Cameron had two rebounds to round out the Hornets.
