GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Floyd Central rolls over Eastern for home win

Nov. 23—FLOYDS KNOBS — The Floyd Central Highlanders started the Thanksgiving break with a 55-19 blowout victory against the Eastern Musketeers on Wednesday night.

Floyd's defense caused 23 turnovers for the game with 10 coming in the second quarter. The Highlanders' 1-2-1 defense led to Samara Miller getting two steals and converting them for two points apiece. Additionally, Brinley Clark made a steal and scored two points off of it in the second.

Miller said the Highlanders' defense disrupted the Musketeers' passing lanes.

"Our defense getting after Eastern was nice," said Floyd Central head coach Randy Gianfagna. "One of our goals was to keep them under 30 points."

The Highlanders finished with 10 players scoring in the game. Coleman led with a game-high 14 points while Miller, Clark and Nora Gibson each totaled eight points apiece.

STREAKING HIGHLANDERS

The Highlanders went on two different streaks.

Floyd went on a 9-0 run to begin the game. Elise Coleman led the way with four points during the surge. Eliza Starrett made a 2-pointer for Eastern to stop the spurt.

"We have been struggling to start out games," Miller said. "We wanted to come out with a lot of energy and we knew we could score at well."

The Highlanders finished on an 8-0 run in the final frame with bench players seeing time. Ava Casteel led the charge for Floyd's reserves with three points while Eva Casteel and Megan Czarnecki added two apiece. Mia Gianfagna added a free throw for Floyd.

"We get hyped when the JV players score because we all put so much work in practice and it's nice to see them being able to get in and score a few points," Miller said.
