Giovanni Reyna scores two more goals in Borussia Dortmund's latest preseason rout
Giovanni Reyna is having some kind of preseason for Borussia Dortmund. The 17-year-old scored his third goal in BVB’s last friendly tune-ups Sunday, opening Dortmund’s account and then doubling its advantage in an eventual 11-2 demolition of Austria Vienna.
Reyna — the son of former United States World Cup captain Claudio Reyna and U.S. women’s national team winger Danielle Egan— got BVB on the board after just nine minutes following a slick give-and-go with teammate Manuel Akanji.

Reyna, who became the youngest American to appear in the UEFA Champions League last season, added his second in the 23rd minute off a clever back-heel from Akanji before being substituted from the match at halftime.

Reyna also scored Dortmund’s first goal in the 2019-20 Bundesliga runner-up’s previous tune-up, slotting home a pass from Erling Haaland. The teenager played only the first half of that match, too, a 6-0 victory over SC Rheindorf Altach, another top-flight Austrian side.

Reyna singed with BVB last summer after four years in New York City FC’s academy. He spent last preseason with BVB’s first team, but he didn’t make his full debut until January.
He was a regular after that, though, appearing in 15 of Dortmund’s final 17 Bundesliga matches in the 2019-20 campaign and playing in both legs of BVB’s loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, notching an assist on Haaland’s game-winner in the first.
Reyna, who represented the U.S. at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup, was set to make his senior national team debut last March before the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the USMNT’s scheduled exhibitions in the Netherlands and Wales.
Dortmund opens its 2020-21 Bundesliga slate on Sept. 19 against Borussia Monchengladbach.
