Giants scouts will be on hand at USC/UCLA to scout Darnold and Rosen

New York Giants fans will undoubtedly tune in to Sunday’s game when they host the AFC West leading Kansas City Chiefs. However, Week 11 of the NFL schedule might not be the important game of the weekend to Giants fans.

That game takes place Saturday night more than 3,000 miles away from MetLife Stadium when USC hosts UCLA. This game is not just for local bragging rights but it may help determine the future of the NFL for years to come.

The 12th-ranked Trojans are led by quarterback Sam Darnold while the rival Bruins have quarterback Josh Rosen behind center. Both Darnold and Rosen are among the top quarterback prospects for the 2018 NFL Draft.

Scouts from at least 20 NFL teams will be on hand at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Saturday night.

The Giants will have scouts present. It is part of the directive of co-owner John Mara to take seriously examine the top quarterback prospects in this year’s class, which is already drawing comparisons to the Classes of 1983 and 2004. The Giants’ likelihood of picking high in the draft seems more certain with a 1-8 record. Eli Manning, the first overall pick in 2004, will be 37 on Jan. 3 and has two years remaining on his current deal.

The Giants recently sent vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross to Los Angeles to scout Rosen. They are also doing their homework on Darnold, even though the word around the rumor mill is that he will return to USC next fall.

Although the Giants drafted Davis Webb in the third round of this year’s draft, they have no choice but to do their due diligence on the quarterbacks in this year’s class. This season is lost although they haven’t been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs…yet.

At some point, they need to see what they have with Webb in a game situation. At the same time, scouting Darnold, Rosen, and other potential franchise quarterbacks is the smartest thing Giants management has done all season.
