NY Giants' faith in Daniel Jones: What it means and why a QB is still in play in NFL Draft

INDIANAPOLIS - New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen promised Tuesday morning that he still has faith in Daniel Jones as his recovery from ACL surgery continues.

There's no question he openly praised the 26-year-old quarterback to whom he gave $82 million in guarantees after leading the team to a road playoff victory two seasons ago - the Giants' first since Super Bowl XLVI here in 2012 - before the bottom fell out for Jones this past year in terms of injury and performance.

But there are layers in that sentiment, of course, and with those comes this undeniable caveat Schoen did not distance himself from in his numerous State of the Giants addresses here at the Scouting Combine:

The Giants will explore all options for what to do with the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and selecting a quarterback remains in play. The circumstances with where the Giants are, how they got here and where Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll want to take this franchise demand all avenues be seriously considered.

Because if that happens, the Giants won't be back in this spot again.

"Where we are at [No.] 6, we're gonna look at everything," Schoen said. "We're gonna look at everything. All positions, and again, you hope you're not up there again picking in the Top 10. It's a good draft, it's a solid draft across the board, and we're gonna have the opportunity to get a good player."

As NorthJersey.com reported, the Giants will meet with the top prospects at the position this week, and that includes USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye, LSU's Jayden Daniels and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy. They are believed to be the top four quarterbacks in the Class of 2024, all first-rounders that could go in the Top 10, and there's a strong chance Williams, Maye and Daniels are taken with the top three picks.

Combine that with the reality the Giants met with Oregon's Bo Nix and Washington's Michael Penix Jr., among others, at the Senior Bowl last month, and the presence of Jones will not stop Schoen and team brass from going down that road if the evaluation takes them there.
