Giannis Antetokounmpo, Chris Paul will be subjects of Disney+ original movies based on their lives

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo wasn’t kidding when he put out a casting call for someone to play him as a kid. Antetokounmpo — along with Chris Paul and UCLA coach Keanon Lowe — will have a Disney+ movie made inspired by his life story.

Disney made that announcement — along with many, many others —during a virtual presentation Thursday.

In October, Antetokounmpo teased the project, putting out a call for kids to play him and his brother when they were teenagers. Antetokounmpo said applicants should resemble him and have some basketball experience.

Antetokounmpo and his brother Thanasis grew up in Greece. At 13, Giannis was discovered basketball coach Spiros Velliniatis. He developed while playing in Greece, and was selected by the Bucks in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft. After three seasons in the NBA, he broke out, and has been one of the league’s best players ever since.

Little is known about the Antetokounmpo movie. The casting call said it would follow Giannis and Thanasis’ rise from Greece to the NBA.

Even less is known about Paul’s movie. Unlike Antetokounmpo, Paul did not tweet out a casting call looking for actors. The 10-time All-Star hasn’t addressed the movie on social media yet.

UCLA coach Keanon Lowe gets movie about his heroic act

UCLA football analyst Keanon Lowe may not be as well known as Antetokounmpo or Paul, but Lowe’s story is the most impactful. In May 2019, Lowe disarmed a student carrying a shotgun while working at Parkrose High School in Portland.

From 2011 to 2014, Lowe played wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks under Chip Kelly. After graduating, Lowe joined Kelly’s NFL coaching staffs in Philadelphia and San Francisco. Lowe coached a high school team before once again joining Kelly at UCLA.

Disney is bringing back the Mighty Ducks

While the “Mighty Ducks” movies aren’t based on true stories — though we wish they were — Disney+ is bringing back coach Gordon Bombay in a new “Mighty Ducks” series called “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.”

Lauren Graham is joining the cast, but Disney did not reveal whether any old favorites from the movies will show up in the series. Here’s hoping Charlie Conway can rally the rest of the Mighty Ducks crew to make a few cameo appearances in the new series. After all, ducks fly together.
