Giancarlo Stanton hits two home runs, needs one more for 60
So much for Giancarlo Stanton slowing down on his march to 60 home runs.
The Miami Marlins slugger went back to his baseball-slaughtering ways on Thursday night with two towering shots at Marlins Park. Stanton now has 59 home runs on the season and like many of Stanton’s blasts, there was no doubt about either of these.

On his second dinger of the night, Stanton unleashed his hardest hit home run of the year at an incredible 118.7 MPH. It’s the fourth-hardest hit in the Statcast era.
At this point the company Stanton is chasing is well known. Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds are the only players to hit 60 in a season. With one more swing, Stanton could join them.
Miami’s final three games come against an Atlanta Braves team that is rather stingy when it comes to giving up homers. They’ve currently given up 188 home runs which ties the Marlins for the 21st-most allowed in the league. Fortunately for Miami, Stanton has 19 career home runs off the Braves.
Obviously, as has been discussed many times, 60 nor 61 is not the home run record. The record is is 73. Reaching that 60-home run plateau, however, would put Stanton among some of game’s all-time great and most recognizable players.
No need to worry about breaking records here. Just enjoy the greatness while it lasts.
