Getting to Know New Raiders OC Todd Downing: Radio Interview Analysis

Legendary voice of the Oakland Raiders and host of the Afternoon Delight on 95.7 FM, The Game, Greg Papa and co-host Bonta Hill were among the first to get to have a sit-down with new offensive coordinator Todd Downing. His quotes appear in red.

Philosophy: Downing earned his way through the coaching ranks making a few stops along the way. Additionally, he learned valuable lessons from many along the way. With that said, Downing credits current Dallas OC Scott Linehan for mentoring him. Equally important is Downing’s approach to mapping out defensive tendencies.

“I certainly like attacking what I see as vulnerabilities in the defense and testing same formation adjustments, personnel adjustments early in the game so we can get a good feel for what we’re going to get throughout.”

Differences between him and former OC Bill Musgrave: Downing formed a bond with Derek Carr during his time as the QB coach. As a result, no one knows Carr better. Through close observation and film study, Downing anticipates Carr’s thought processes.

“I plan on being on the field. I like being down there and being able to look Derek in the eyes, kind of get a feel for what the personnel is doing and who has the hot hand.”

Relationship with Derek Carr: Granted, most players are closer with position coaches than coordinators. Yet, the relationship be tween quarterbacks and QB coaches is rare. For starters, only two or three quarterbacks are on the roster. There is more one-on-one time spent.

“Derek and I certainly both view football the same way. extremely fortunate to be able to do as means of work. but not work to us because we have so much fun with it.”

Carr’s Improvisation:

“He certainly can handle it; he is very intelligent does a nice job communicating at the line of scrimmage. If we do ask Derek to do more of that stuff he will handle it with flying colors.”

All things considered, the Raiders picked the perfect replacement for Musgrave. During the interview, Downing seemed confident, honest and relaxed. This is a good omen for RaiderNation.
