Genzell nets three goals, two assists in Carlson hockey triumph

TRENTON – Gibraltar Carlson’s hockey team finished the regular season with an 8-17 record.

The Marauders put that behind them Wednesday night and got the postseason off to a great start, opening the Division 2 state tournament with a 9-1 rout of Woodhaven.

Carlson evoked the eight-goal mercy rule with more than 12 minutes left in the game.

Justin Genzel led the way with three goals and two assists.

Brody Kulhanek, Charlie Huntoon, Chase Moore, Jager Whitten, Landen Anglelos and Brayden Beaudette scored the other goals while Drake Dietz, Dominic Fioritto, Jase Marcott, Evan Kastl and Tyler Watson were credited with assists.

Keeghan Moore was strong in goal, making 12 saves.

Carlson advances to play Trenton at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Arena.

Downriver, New Boston fall

LIVONIA – Downriver Unified and New Boston United both bowed out of the state tournament Wednesday with shutout losses in the Division 1 Regional at Eddie Edgar Arena.

Downriver fell 4-0 to Canton and New Boston suffered an 8-0 loss to Plymouth.

"Canton outshot us nearly 3 to 1 and that was the difference in the game," Downriver Unified coach Adam Cousino said. "Our whole team, especially our seniors, fought to the very last second for their schools, for the fans, and for each other. The coaches are incredibly proud of them and the work they put into this season.

"They are already eager to begin training for next season. These players love to play and it shows."

BOYS BASKETBALL

SMCC getting hot

MONROE – The St. Mary Catholic Central boys basketball team is getting on a roll at the right time.

The Falcons continued their late-season surge with a 58-43 win over Detroit Public Safety Wednesday night.

It was the fifth straight win for SMCC (13-8) and ninth in their last 10 games.

Buddy Snodgrass led a balanced attack with 13 points. Drew Vuich tossed in 11 and Ian Foster 10.

SMCC closes the regular season with a game at Jefferson Friday before opening the state tournament in the Division 3 District at Blissfield Monday.

Seniors spark Huron

NEW BOSTON – All five seniors scored on senior night as New Boston Huron beat Garden City 65-55 Wednesday night.

Three of those seniors were the top three scorers for the 13-8 Chiefs – Kyle Kantola with 20, Chad Martin with 14 and Nate Morse with 8.

“This group was a big part of our success this season and they will be missed,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said.

Fowlerville too fast

FOWLERVIILLE – Milan could not keep pace with Fowlerville in a 73-42 loss Wednesday night.

“Fowlerville played tough tonight in there building,” Milan coach Bobby Green said. “hey beat us up and down the floor tonight multiple times and beat us in transition for layups. We didn't match the speed they displayed tonight.”

Muhammad Ba led Milan (3-18) with 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Huron dominates

GARDEN CITY – New Boston Huron scored 20 points in the first quarter and that was more than enough than it needed for a 51-15 rout of Garden City Wednesday night.

Gabby Emelian netted 12 points and sophomore Elle Huffman added a career-high 8 for 9-10 Huron.

Clinton stops Whiteford

CLINTON – Emily Rasor scored 12 points and Emily Hill 11, but it was not enough for Whiteford in a 45-34 loss to Clinton Wednesday night.

The Bobcats fell behind 17-8 after one quarter and never recovered in falling to 10-8. They shot just 25 percent from the floor.

“We just couldn’t get the ball to fall through the hoop tonight,” Whiteford coach Nick Brillhart said.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Burmeister hits winner

TEMPERANCE – Kinzi Burmeister hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to give Bedford’s eighth-grade girls an 18-15 win over Dexter Maroon Wednesday night.

The seventh grade won 24-11.
