Gateway grad Sarah Corrie chasing PSAC indoor shot put title

Feb. 11—Sarah Corrie is on a mission to bring home another Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference shot put title this winter, and the Gateway graduate is on her way to again challenging for gold.

The Slippery Rock standout kicked off the indoor season Dec. 2 with a runner-up finish at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker. Her NCAA-

provisional throw of 14.21 meters, her season-best, trailed only Pitt's Norrah Lemongo (14.50) in the final standings.

Corrie claimed the Jim Wuske Invitational shot put title Jan. 27 in Alliance, Ohio. Her best throw of 13.28 meters was tops in the field of 63 competitors.

The PSAC indoor championships are Feb. 18-19, at Lehigh University with the NCAA championships March 8-9 at Pittsburg State in Kansas.

Corrie captured the 2023 PSAC indoor title with a season-best throw of 14.59 meters and then advanced to the NCAA championships where she finished 16th (13.16).

Her title-winning roll didn't stop in the outdoor season as she claimed the PSAC championship in May with a leading throw of 14.41 meters.

Corrie is a graduate student working toward a Master's of Public Health with a concentration in environmental and occupational health.

Shelly Jones

Gateway grad Shelly Jones and Corrie are expected to battle again at the PSAC indoor championships, and Jones is up to top form as the meet approaches.

The Clarion thrower took third in the shot at the YSU Mid-Major on Feb. 3, tossing the implement 12.82 meters. The distance came on her first attempt of the day. She also hit 12.81 meters in her fourth attempt of the competition.

The Golden Eagles graduate student shined on the first day of the Bucknell Bison Open and Multi on Jan. 26.

She finished runner-up to Siobhan O'Sullivan from Division I Bucknell with a top throw of 12.91 meters. O'Sullivan distanced herself from the 30-competitor field with a best throw of 14.16 meters.

Jones edged Nilaja Wiltshire (12.86) from Division I Fairleigh Dickinson.

Jones kicked off her indoor season at the YSU Icebreaker with a fifth in the shot with a top distance of 13.05 meters. She ranked second among all non-Division I competitors

(Corrie, second place overall).

Evan Whiteside

Gateway grad Evan Whiteside is enjoying another strong season for the Thiel College wrestling team.

The Tomcats senior most recently recorded a tech fall victory (20-4, 7:00) at 133 in Thiel's close criteria loss to Penn State-Behrend on Feb. 6.

He led the Thiel contingent at the 37th John Suma Invitational at Baldwin Wallace University on Feb. 3 with a second-place finish in the 133-pound bracket.

Whiteside reached the finals with a tech fall win (21-3) in the first round, an 8-6 decision in the quarterfinals a major decision (15-4) in the semifinals.

He fell to Baldwin Wallace's Jaden Hinton, the No. 1 seed, in the finals.

Whiteside was selected the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 29 for his performance in a 26-22 victory over Waynesburg three nights earlier.

His tech fall win (20-3, 5:16) over JT Hollyfield at 141 gave the Tomcats a 17-0 lead in the match after three bouts.

Whiteside will compete at the PAC Championships on Friday at Washington & Jefferson College.

Ryan Greggerson

Gateway grad Ryan Greggerson, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, saw action in 14 of Pitt-Greensburg's first 22 games this season and made 10 starts.

He collected six points and six rebounds in a six-point setback to La Roche on Feb. 7.

Greggerson hit for a season-best 16 points Jan. 24 in a 92-84 conference loss to Penn State Altoona and pulled down a season-best 11 rebounds in a 69-57 win over Wells College on Feb. 3.

He recorded five double-digit scoring efforts over his 14 games and averaged 7.3 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Lexi Margolis

Lexi Margolis, a Pitt-Johnstown sophomore guard and Gateway grad, started her second and third games of the season, respectively, against Mercyhurst on Feb. 3 and Clarion on Feb. 7.

Both games were wins for UPJ against their PSAC foes, and they lifted the team to 14-8 overall and 9-7 in the conference.

Margolis recorded 11 points on 50% shooting and collected seven rebounds in a 67-46 rout of Mercyhurst. It was her second-highest point total of the season. She tallied 12 against East Stroudsburg on Dec. 19.

She totaled five points, five rebounds and two assists against Clarion (67-56).

Marina Grado

Marina Grado, a Gateway grad and freshman guard on the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team, is getting the opportunity to show what she can do in games for the PAC power Lady Presidents.

She scored a season-best eight points in a win over Franciscan on Jan. 31 and collected six points and a pair of assists against Thiel on Feb. 3.

W&J was 20-2 overall and 16-1 in conference play after a 91-71 win over Geneva on Feb. 7.

Bryce Washington

Gateway grad Bryce Washington, a senior thrower at Cal (Pa.), earned a PSAC indoor qualifying mark with a top throw of 14.32 meters (46 feet, 11.75 inches) at the Denison Shannon Invitational on Feb. 3 in Granville, Ohio.

Washington's best throw landed him in fourth in a field of 29 competitors who completed the event.
