Gastonia, Shelby high school top performers: East Gaston's Sherrill explodes for 40 in win

Here is a daily list of the top performers from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties during the week of Jan. 15-20, 2024.

Boys basketball

Isaac Byers Jr., Ashbrook: Led the Green Wave with 19 points in a 75-40 win over Stuart Cramer. The Green Wave are 14-2 overall, 5-1 in Big South 3A.

Quammel Scott, Ashbrook: Scored 10 points.

Jamari Smith, Ashbrook: Scored 11 points.

Trent Sherrill, East Gaston: Scored a career-high 40 points in a 74-64 win over Burns. The Warriors are 11-6 overall, 4-1 in Southern Piedmont 1A/2A.

Jackson Fannon, East Lincoln: Broke East Lincoln’s single-game record with 10 3-pointers on his way to 36 points as part of an 83-64 win over North Iredell. He also became the school’s all-time leader with 170 3-pointers made. Winners of four in a row, the Mustangs are 10-6 overall, 4-2 in Western Foothills 3A.

Houston Hartsell, East Lincoln: Scored 14 points.

Grant Lawless, East Lincoln: Scored 12 points.

Makoi Mabor Marier, Gaston Christian: Scored a team-high 37 points in a 68-56 loss to Concord Academy.

Gavin Fields, Gaston Day: Scored 12 points in an 81-63 win over Hickory Grove. The Spartans are now 14-8 overall, 6-3 in the NCISAA Metrolina Athletic Conference (MAC).

Kurt Hunter, Gaston Day: Had 14 points.

Griffen Simpson, Gaston Day: Led his team with 21 points.

Braylen Todd, Gaston Day: Scored 12 points.

Elijah Sherrill, Highland Tech: Fell just short of a double-double, scoring 23 points to go with nine rebounds in a 50-39 win over Bessemer City. The Rams are 5-11, 2-3 in Southern Piedmont 1A/2A.

Elijah Whitted, Highland Tech: Scored 11 points and had eight rebounds.

Zii Phillips, Hunter Huss: Scored 16 points to go with five assists, four rebounds and four steals as the Huskies downed Forestview, 62-51. Huss is 5-9 overall, 4-2 in Big South 3A.

Bradley Floyd, Kings Mountain: Scored a game-high 24 points in an 84-81 loss to South Point.

Kee’donn Linney, Kings Mountain: Scored 16 points.

Caleb Nixon, Kings Mountain: Had 10 points.

Tucker Robinette, Kings Mountain: Had 19 points.

Landen Lyerly, Lincolnton: Finished with a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) along with eight blocks in a 72-65 win over Maiden. The Wolves are now 14-2 overall, 5-1 in Catawba Valley 2A.

Tyler McClain, Lincolnton: Hit four 3-pointers en route to 18 points.

L.J. Smith, Lincolnton: Scored 18 of his team-high 33 points in the fourth quarter.

Ben Heavner, North Lincoln: Scored a team-high 18 points in an 84-58 win over West Iredell. The Knights are 13-3 overall, 5-1 in Western Foothills 3A.

Kellen Karr, North Lincoln: Scored 11 points.

Caleb Kidd, North Lincoln: Scored 14 points.

Tanner Lineberger, North Lincoln: Scored 13 points.

Drew Hollifield, Shelby: Led the Golden Lions with 16 points in a 70-42 win at Thomas Jefferson. Shelby is 9-6 overall, 5-0 in Southern Piedmont 1A/2A.

Canden McGill, Shelby: Scored 12 points.

Grady Morgan, Shelby: Scored 13 points.

Dylan Bradley, South Point: Scored 22 points in the Red Raiders’ 84-81 win over Kings Mountain. The Red Raiders are 8-7 overall, 3-3 in Big South 3A.

Quay Harris, South Point: Scored 12 points.

Greyson Kines, South Point: Scored 16 points.

Christian Petty, South Point: Had 10 points.

Graham Williams, South Point: Scored 14 points.

Gideon Allen, West Lincoln: Scored 24 points in a 55-48 loss to East Burke.

Bryce Beddingfield, West Lincoln: Had 10 points.

Girls basketball

Kionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Earned a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds, along with seven assists, six steals and five blocks in a 56-18 win over Highland Tech. Winners of five straight, the Yellow Jackets move to 8-10 overall, 5-1 in Southern Piedmont 1A/2A.

Tionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, along with four steals and a block.

Harmony Allen, Crest: Scored 11 points in a 63-43 win over North Gaston. The Chargers are 8-4 overall, 3-3 in Big South 3A.

Nevaeh Blackwell, Crest: Scored a team-high 25 points.

Abbie Hege, East Lincoln: Earned a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, along with six steals, four assists and a block in a 57-41 win over North Iredell. The Lady Mustangs are 15-1 overall, 6-0 in Western Foothills 3A.

Emma Montanari, East Lincoln: Scored a team-high 16 points to go with eight rebounds.

Taniyah Thomas, East Lincoln: Had 11 points, four rebounds, four steals and a block,

Molly Forgan, Forestview: Earned a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and two blocks in a 67-54 win over Hunter Huss. The Jaguars are 12-4 overall, 4-2 in Big South 3A.

Amani Neely, Forestview: Scored 16 points.

Tralyn Phillips, Forestview: Had 10 points, five steals and four assists.

Blair Riley, Forestview: Finished with a double-double, scoring a team-high 21 points to go with 14 rebounds, seven blocks and three assists.

Myla Hoover, Hunter Huss: Scored 19 points in a 67-54 loss to Forestview.

Brooklyn Swann, Hunter Huss: Scored a team-high 21 points.

Jaleila Littlejohn, North Gaston: Scored a game-high 30 points in a 63-43 loss to Crest.

Madi Black, North Lincoln: Scored 12 points in a 73-27 win over West Iredell. The Lady Knights are 10-5 overall, 2-3 in Western Foothills 3A.

Hailey Hagler, North Lincoln: Earned a double-double with  a team-high 20 points to go with 11 assists.

Ally Smith, North Lincoln: Scored 10 points.

Claire Frank, South Point: Scored 11 points in a 61-20 win over Kings Mountain. The Lady Raiders are 10-6 overall, 5-1 in Big South 3A.

Maddie Frank, South Point: Scored 10 points.

Amya Graham, South Point: Recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points.

Oshauna Holland, Stuart Cramer: Had 20 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a 51-35 win over Ashbrook. The Storm are now 12-4 overall and 6-0 in Big South 3A.

Lauren Humphrey, Stuart Cramer: Had 18 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Hadley Womack, Stuart Cramer: Finished with 11 points, three assists and three rebounds.

Wednesday, Jan. 17

Boys basketball

Tye Clay, Burns: Had 21 points and five assists in a 72-57 win over Thomas Jefferson. The Bulldogs improve to 7-8 overall, 4-0 in Southern Piedmont 1A/2A.

Jeremiah Norris, Burns: Scored 19 points.

Kamari Surratt, Burns: Earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jackson Fannon, East Lincoln: Earned a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds in an 86-60 win over West Iredell. He hit eight 3-pointers as the Mustangs improved to 9-6 overall, 3-2 in Western Foothills 3A.

Davis Hill, East Lincoln: Had 10 points and five assists.

Grant Lawless, East Lincoln: Had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Girls basketball

Sydnie Enste, Shelby: Finished just shy of a triple-double with 18 points, 10 blocks and eight rebounds as the Lady Lions downed Ashbrook, 38-30. The Lady Lions improve to 5-9 overall.

Kiara Anderson, East Lincoln: Had 18 points, seven steals, six assists and four rebounds in a 91-11 win over West Iredell. The Lady Mustangs improved to 14-1 overall, 5-0 in Western Foothills 3A.

Emma Montanari, East Lincoln: Had 21 points and five steals.

Lane Pethel, East Lincoln: Had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Taniyah Thomas, East Lincoln: Had 10 points and five steals.

Boys basketball

Makoi Mabor Marier, Gaston Day: Had 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in the Eagles’ 68-43 win over Hickory Grove Christian. The Eagles are 12-12 overall, 6-2 in NCISAA MAC.

Cameron Newman, Gaston Christian: Had 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Joe Rhyne, Gaston Christian: Had 14 points and three assists.

Deshawn Coulter, Gaston Day: Scored 12 points in a 58-53 win over Northside Christian. The Spartans are 13-8 overall, 5-3 in NCISAA MAC.
