Late game swoon dooms Hoyas

Newark, N.J. – Georgetown led by three with just over two minutes left, but Seton Hall scored the final six points of the game as the Hoyas lost, 62-59, on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center.

It was the fourth-straight loss for the Hoyas, who fall to 14-16 overall and 5-12 in the BIG EAST, while Seton Hall improves to 19-10 overall and 9-8 in league play.

Eight different players scored for the Hoyas, who received 29 points from the bench. Junior guard L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) scored 15 points and had four rebounds, while graduate student guard Rodney Pryor (Evanston, Ill./Notre Dame Prep/Robert Morris) added 11 points and two steals. Sophomore forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) added nine points and four rebounds off the bench, while senior forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) added eight points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J./St. Anthony) added two points, six rebounds and four assists and senior center Bradley Hayes (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) had eight points and two rebounds.

Tied at 56-all with 4:39 left, the Hoyas took a 57-56 lead on a free throw from Cameron with 4:21 left and extended the lead to 59-56 on a driving layup from Peak with 2:28 to play.

Seton Hall pulled to within 59-58 on free throws from Desi Rodriguez with 1:53 to play, then took a lead on an Angel Delgado layup with 1:12 left. After a Georgetown turnover, Seton Hall’s Khadeem Carrington hit two of three free throws to take a 62-59 lead with 18 seconds left. An shot from Pryor to tie the game was off the mark at the buzzer.

The first half was closely contested over the opening 15-plus minutes before Seton Hall used a 12-3 run over a span of 3:44 and took a 36-26 lead on a jumper from Rodriguez. A layup from Hayes, who scored six points in the half, closed the gap to 38-30.

Tied 12-all, the Hoyas used a 5-1 break to take a 17-13 lead on a 3-pointer from Peak with 10:15 to play in the half. The Pirates took an 18-17 lead on a Rodriguez trey, but a layup from Peak and a jumper from Pryor gave GU a 21-18 lead. Hayes hit a jumper with 4:55 left to cut GU’s deficit to 24-23 before Seton Hall went on its late run.

The Hoyas close out the BIG EAST regular season on Saturday, March 4, hosting No. 2 Villanova at Verizon Center for Senior Day. Tipoff is slate for noon at Verizon Center and the game will be shown on FOX, with Gus Johnson
