Gabriel Hernandez wraps up playing days at Barstow by earning DSL Player of the Year

After wrapping up a stellar career at Barstow High School, Gabriel Hernandez was named the Desert Sky League’s Player of the Year.

Hernandez helped lead the Aztecs to a CIF-Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinal run with a dominant season on the mound.

The righty struck out 60 batters and logged a .46 ERA over 60 ⅓ innings of work as a senior. To earn the league’s Player of the Year award, he did not allow an earned run and struck out 27 batters over 27 innings in DSL play.

Hernandez wasn’t limited to just success on the mound. At the plate, he hit for a .301 average with 10 RBI, 26 runs and 21 stolen bases.

Barstow seniors recently celebrated graduation, Hernandez included. He will attend California State University, Northridge to continue playing baseball. After three years on the varsity squad, Hernandez ends his playing days at Barstow with a 1.79 ERA and 211 strikeouts.

Four of his teammates received All-DSL First Team nods, including his younger brother Evan Hernandez. Like his older brother, he also hit for a .301 average, to go along with 17 RBI, 16 runs and five stolen bases.

After claiming the league title, Adelanto leads the way with five First Team selections. The Saints’ nods include Chris Esponoza and Jacob Chivichon.

Espinoza led the Saints by going 6-3 with a 1.44 ERA and 55 strikeouts. At the dish, he hit for a .338 average with 17 RBI, 21 runs and 11 stolen bases.

Chivichon went 7-5 with 3.03 ERA and 54 strikeouts. Offensively, he hit for a .277 average with 14 RBI, 20 runs and eight stolen bases.

Victor Valley had three First Team selections, including Patrick Singer, who led the DSL with a .427 batting average. Singer also tallied 15 RBI, 15 runs and five stolen bases.

Silverado’s Uriel Martin, who followed right behind Singer’s batting average at .415, was one of two Silverado players to receive a nod to the First Team.
