FSU softball's Jaysoni Beachum, Isa Torres finalists for national freshman of the year

On Thursday afternoon, Florida State true freshmen Jaysoni Beachum and Isa Torres were named the top 25 finalists for the TUCCI/NFCA National Freshman of the Year award. Beachum and Torres are the seventh and eighth Florida State players to be named a top 25 finalist. FSU's eight top 25 honorees are tied for the third most in the country.

The freshmen infield duo has been nothing short of spectacular this season as they have anchored the Seminoles' left side of the infield all season long. Beachum is putting together one of the greatest freshmen seasons in school history and is on pace to break a handful of FSU freshmen records. Beachum leads the team in batting average (.444), hits (64), RBI (53), home runs (13) and on-base percentage (.523). Beachum has been extremely hot lately, as she has hit five home runs in her last six games to go along with 11 RBI. Beachum needs just six RBIs to break Sydney Sherril's true freshman RBI record of 58, which she set back in 2018. Beachum also has a great shot at breaking the overall program record for batting average in a single season. Danielle Cox currently holds the record as she hit .432 in 1999. Beachum has also been spectacular at third base as she has started 46 out of the 47 games at the position and has posted a .976 fielding position with 94, 29 putouts and just three errors.

The Seminoles have won 19 out of its last 20 games, and Torres has led the pack for the Noles on offense during that time. Torres is hitting.390 this season with 42 RBI but is hitting .458 with 22 RBI in the last 20 games where the Seminoles are 19-1 during that time. In her last five games, Torres has recorded seven hits and 13 RBIs, including a three-run home run last night against Florida to blow the game open. Torres has started all but one game at shortstop and made jaw-dropping plays all season. Torres holds a .971 fielding percentage with just four errors while recording 91 assists and 44 putouts.

The Seminoles will be back in action this weekend against North Carolina. The series will begin on Friday at 6 p.m. on ACCNX.
