Division 1

Milwaukee Marquette 14, Kimberly 7

SUN PRAIRIE - Tommy Novotny's 23-yard touchdown run with 5:18 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning score as the Hilltoppers advanced to the Division 1 state championship game.

Marquette (11-2) will play Franklin (13-0) in the final at Camp Randall Stadium at 4 p.m. Friday.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout. The teams exchanged touchdowns in the second quarter through the air. Peter McDevitt hitting Thad Hoffman on a 32-yard strike for Marquette with 10:22 left in the first half.

Kimberly answered on the ensuing possession with a 33-yard touchdown connection from quarterback Carson Pendleton to receiver Bryson Vieth with 5:59 left in the half.

Kimberly (10-2) had two drives stall in Marquette territory in the fourth quarter, with the Hilltoppers’ scoring drive sandwiched in-between.

Novotny finished with 70 yards on 19 carries to lead all rushers.

Vieth had eight catches for 88 yards to pace Kimberly, which also got 129 yards passing from Pendleton.

Gavin Tyson had 61 yards rushing on 18 carries for the Papermakers.

Division 2

Waunakee 24, Kaukauna 14

RIPON - The Ghosts’ season came to an end in the state semifinals for the second season in a row as the Warriors never trailed in the game.

Kaukauna, which lost to West De Pere 26-7 in last year’s Division 2 semifinals, finishes the season with an 11-2 record.

The Ghosts were attempting to advance to the state championship game for the second time in school history. They lost to Monroe 38-0 in the Division 2 title game in 1992.

Ben Lindley had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to give Waunakee a 7-0 lead, and his 3-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter made it 24-14.

Kaukauna scored on a 65-yard run by Connor Kincheloe in the second quarter to tie the game 7-7. Kincheloe added a 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter to pull the Ghosts within 17-14.

Division 3

Rice Lake 30, Green Bay Notre Dame 15

MARSHFIELD - Two long runs in the second quarter propelled the Warriors to the win over the Tritons.

Notre Dame took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Christian Collins.

Rice Lake bounced back with a 54-yard touchdown run by Lucas Peters and a 61-yard run by Jacob Kunz on a quarterback counter. Kunz’s run came with 27 seconds remaining in the first half.

Easton Stone put Rice Lake ahead 22-7 with a 7-yard run in the third quarter.

Kunz made it 30-7 with a 28-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame closed to within two scores with just over 5 minutes to play on Stanley Smith’s 36-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Notre Dame, which finishes its season with an 11-2 record, was led by Collins who carried the ball 35 times for 160 yards.

Rice Lake, which is 12-1, will face Grafton (11-2) in the Division 3 state title game on Friday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.

Wrightstown 33, St. Croix Falls 12

RHINELANDER – The Tigers raced to a 21-6 halftime lead in rolling past the Saints in a state semifinal.

Wrightstown (11-2) will play La Crosse Aquinas in the Division 5 state title game at 4 p.m. Thursday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.

Five players scored for Wrightstown against St. Croix Falls (8-5). Daniel Buntin scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter. Aiden Meador returned a fumble 44 yards for the lone first-half touchdown early in the second for St. Croix Falls.

Wrightstown answered with short touchdown runs by Payton Vande Hey (1 yard) and Jaden Kittoe (3 yards).

The Tigers pulled away in the second half, with Trevor Vandey Hey scoring from 33 yards out and Aiden Humphreys capping the scoring with a 17-yard rushing score.

Kittoe and Kalden Colwell had interceptions for the Tigers, with Colwell’s pick setting up Trevor Vande Hey’s touchdown.

DEFOREST - The Redbirds outscored the Storm 14-0 in the second half to advance to the state championship game.

Darlington scored the winning touchdown with 13 seconds left in the third quarter. Leading 28-26, Kewaunee quarterback Thomas Stangel dropped back to pass on a third-and-6 and was picked off by Brady Long, who returned the ball 28 yards for a touchdown.

Owen Carlson accounted for three of Kewaunee’s four touchdowns, scoring on runs of 45 and 26 yards and on a 75-yard fumble recovery with seconds remaining in the first half.

Demardo Echols had Kewaunee’s other touchdown, scoring on a 26-yard pass from Stangel.

Kewaunee finishes the season with a 12-1 record.

GIRLS SWIMMING

WIAA Division 2 State Championships

WAUKESHA - Ashwaubenon claimed three championships at the Division 2 state meet at Waukesha South on Friday night.

Sienna Nitzke swam to the titles in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles with times of 50.68 seconds and 1:48.98, respectively. She finished runner-up in the 100 and third in the 200 last season.

In the distance freestyle, Erin Schuch of Ashwaubenon captured the championship. She completed the 500-yard race in 5:03.04 after placing fourth a year ago.

Schuch also placed fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.59.

Ashwaubenon placed second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.18 with the team of Schuch, Charlotte McNicoll, Emma Kozloski and Nitke. The same quartet placed third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:38.08.

Rhinelander won the Division 2 team title. The Hodags cruised to the title with 268 points and were crowned champions in six of the 12 events in the meet. It’s the program’s second state championship. Whitefish Bay finished second with 187 points.

Ashwaubenon placed fourth in the team standings with 152 points.

The Division 1 meet is Saturday, with diving starting at 9:30 a.m. and swimming events at 2:30 p.m.
