FOOTBALL

Division 1

Neenah 21, Chippewa Falls 0

NEENAH - The Rockets led 21-0 at halftime and rode a stifling defense to the second-round victory over the Cardinals.

Neenah improves to 9-2 overall and advances to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2004. The Rockets ended that season with a 14-13 loss to Marshfield in three overtimes in the state semifinals.

The Rockets will play at Kimberly (9-1) next Friday. The Papermakers beat Stevens Point 35-18 on Friday. Kimberly beat Neenah 21-0 in a Fox Valley Association game Sept. 29.

Grant Dean took a shovel pass from Ashton Van Beek and raced 41 yards for a touchdown to give Neenah a 7-0 lead against Chippewa Falls. Van Beek added a 68-yard touchdown run with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter to put the Rockets ahead 14-0.

Dean’s 7-yard touchdown run up the middle with 5:10 remaining in the second quarter and the third successful extra-point kick by Liam Wasco made it 21-0.

Chippewa Falls had a touchdown pass in the third quarter nullified by an illegal player downfield penalty.

It was the first matchup ever between Neenah and Chippewa Falls.

Division 2

Kaukauna 13, West De Pere 7

KAUKAUNA - The Ghosts survived a last-play pass that fell incomplete to defeat the Phantoms and advance to the third round of the playoffs, where they will host the Cedarburg Bulldogs.

Kaukauna took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Osvaldo Soto Sanchez.

A beautiful catch in the left side of the end zone by Parker Schuh on a 15-yard pass from Finnley Doriot and the ensuing extra point put Kaukauna up 10-0.

Soto Sanchez then booted a 39-yard field goal to make it 13-0.

West De Pere would not go quietly, however.

The Phantoms made it 13-7 on a fourth-and-1 from the Kaukauna 5-yard line on a jump pass by Evan Ott to Joseph Riesenberg.

Then it got really interesting.

Kaukauna faced a fourth-and-4 on its own 17-yard line with 6 seconds remaining in the game.

Doriot dropped back to pass and completed a pass that was cuaght short of the first down, turning the ball over to West De Pere with 3 seconds left on the 10-yard line.

Duke Shovald dropped back to pass and threw it to Ott, who filtered out of the backfield uncovered. Shovald’s pass was a bit high and the wide-open Ott was unable to catch it, ending the game.

Division 4

Xavier 14, Winneconne 3

APPLETON - Tyler Brightman picked off a pair of passes and scored the deciding touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Reid Hietpas as the Hawks outlasted the Wolves on a slick field at Rocky Bleier Field.

Both defenses were up to the task as Winneconne was held to 151 total yards, while Xavier managed 195, with 97 coming in the second half.

Brightman’s second interception set up the Hawks’ first score.

Winneconne had a shot to even the score after recovering a fumble deep in Xavier territory, but settled for Mason Dorn’s 23-yard field goal with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Xavier then sealed the game by Hietpas’ ingenuity. After the Hawks were stopped at the Winneconne 6 late in the fourth, the senior quarterback talked coach David Hinkens into lining up as if they were going to run a play. Instead, Hietpas’ hard count induced an offsides penalty, giving Xavier a first-and-goal at the 3. Matthew Potter then ran it in for the score with just 2:10 remaining.

The second-seeded Hawks will face top-seeded Lodi next Friday in a third-round matchup.
