FRIDAY PREPS: Farwell posts district sweep against Vega

Jan. 20—VEGA — Farwell's boys opened an eight-point lead at the quarter and the Steers went on to defeat Vega 50-38 on Friday night in a District 3-2A matchup.

Sophomore Braddock Foster scored 13 points for Farwell (16-9, 3-0 district), which posted its fifth victory in a row.

Senior Jose Silerio paced the Longhorns (10-9, 2-1) with 13 points.

In other boys action on Friday night:

Melrose 72, Capitan 30 — The Buffaloes put all 11 players in the scoring column and cruised past the host Tigers after grabbing a 25-14 advantage at the quarter.

Junior Josiah Roybal and sophomore Jaxon Odom delivered 13 points apiece and senior Dathan Yeary chipped in 12 for Melrose (14-1), ranked second by MaxPreps in Class 1A.

Freshman D.J. Robinson scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, for Capitan (5-10).

Elida 71, Floyd 35 — At Elida, the Tigers led 27-8 at the quarter and cruised in the District 4-1A opener for both squads.

Senior Seth Jimenez led four players in double digits for Elida (7-9 overall) with 20 points, while junior Hardy Fraze added 13, sophomore Radlee Ferguson 11 and senior Seth Smith 10.

For the Broncos (5-7), seniors Benton Cain and Isaias Nieto notched 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Panhandle 69, Bovina 38 — The host Panthers got off to a 13-2 start in the first quarter in District 3-2A.

Junior Wesley Kuhler scored 23 points, junior Dylan Pohlmeier 13 and freshman Luke Schmucker 10 for Panhandle (10-9, 2-1), while senior Miguel Lopez topped the Mustangs (9-15, 1-2) with 15 points.

In girls contests on Friday night:

Farwell 81, Vega 38 — In a District 3-2A clash at Vega, the Lady Blue extended their winning streak to 10 games as junior Bella Jaime went off for a personal-best 25 points, including 7-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line.

Juniors Makylee Baldwin and Landri Richey added 19 and 12 points, respectively, for Farwell (24-3, 4-0 district), ranked fourth in Class 2A by MaxPreps.

Most of the offense for the Lady Longhorns (11-17, 3-2) came from junior Jaz Martinez with 16 points and senior Lucy Richards with 14.

Amherst 30, Clovis Christian 26 — The Lady Bulldogs pulled out a nip-and-tuck game at CCS, outscoring the Lady Eagles 20-15 in the second half to erase a one-point deficit.

Senior Dennys Reyes paced Amherst (3-16) with 15 points. For CCS (10-5), which won by a point at Amherst in its season opener, freshmen Hannah McKay and Madisyn Kruckeberg each had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 11 and 6 points, respectively.

Melrose 43, Capitan 24 — The Lady Buffs, ranked second in Class 1A by MaxPreps, built a 17-3 first-quarter cushion at Capitan and put it on cruise control the rest of the way.

Senior Graci Odom led Melrose (13-2) with 16 points while sophomore Skyla Wicker contributed 11. For the Lady Tigers (5-11), junior Reyanne Harris had 12 points.

Elida 44, Floyd 19 — The homestanding Lady Tigers pulled away steadily in the District 4-1A lidlifter for both squads, riding a personal-best 16 points from eighth-grader Kali Norman. Freshman Addison Yates added eight points for Elida (9-8).

Senior Jona Baros was the top scorer for Floyd (1-11) with eight points.
