Friday baseball: Brady Kaufman was in total control against unbeaten New Lexington.

NEW LEXINGTON — With Brady Kaufman and Isaac McGill on the mound, runs were going to be at a premium in New Lexington on Friday.

It proved impossible for the host Panthers.

Kaufman fired five shutout innings with seven strikeouts, and two relievers escaped late trouble as visiting Tri-Valley pulled away for a 4-0 win in a Muskingum Valley League crossover.

The win kept Tri-Valley (8-1, 7-0 MVL-Big) tied atop the Big School Division standings with Sheridan, which the Scotties play on Monday and Tuesday in their only meetings. New Lex (9-1, 7-1 MVL-Small) lost for the first time in 10 games but still lead the Small School Division by one game.

Kaufman and McGill posted three straight scoreless innings, but the Scotties broke through with three two-out runs in the fourth.

McGill struck out the first two batters, but a dropped third strike allowed Gavin Harrold to reach. After two walks loaded the bases, a passed ball brought a run home to break the tie.

Ryan Lamonica followed with a lined single to center to bring home two more to push the lead to 3-0, and Ashton Sensibaugh's sacrifice fly in the fifth added the final run.

New Lex had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth against reliever Kyler Brennan but failed to score after Lane Baker grounded out.

Jacob Dold's double led New Lex, which had five hits but struck out 10 times. McGill yielded two hits, walked two, hit two and struck out 10 in five innings.

Sheridan 12, West Muskingum 2 (5 inn.): A.J. Winders launched a grand slam in the third inning and drove in five in an MVL crossover win in Falls Township.

Caden Sheridan added a solo homer in the first and an RBI double for the Generals (12-0, 8-0 MVL-Big), who had six extra-base hits. Cole Cashdollar had a double and two singles, Brady White added two doubles and Noah Wamer two singles for Sheridan.

Tyler Turnes and Austin Cannon, who pitched three innings each, combined to allow six hits with two walks and two strikeouts for Sheridan.

Wes Houston hit a home run and Ashton Ansel singled twice for West (7-4, 6-2 MVL-Small), which had six hits and three errors. Alston Williamson took the loss.

Sheridan also completed its suspended game with visiting John Glenn prior to its game with the Tornadoes, earning a 5-4 win after A.J. Winders doubled, took third on a sacrifice and scored on Ben Fox's squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Winders had the Generals' only extra-base hit. Wamer and Fox had two singles, while White pitched five innings. Caden Sheridan struck out 10 in four innings of one-hit relief to get the win.

Owen Edwards had two hits, Wylee Woodard singled with an RBI and Ross Lake took the loss in relief, allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Rosecrans 8, Lancaster Fisher Cath. 7 (8 inn.): The Bishops trailed 5-1 in the fourth but rallied for a Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win on the road.

Nick Bernath singled home Brendan Bernath with the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Nick reached on a lead-off error in center field, one of six the Irish committed.

Xander Daniels pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Mikey Burkhart allowed four earned runs with six strikeouts in six innings as the starter.

Nick Bernath and Coen Grandstaff had two singles and five players drew walks for Rosecrans (7-3, 5-1 MSL-Cardinal), which has had four straight games decided by one run.

River View 12, Crooksville 12: The Black Bears and Ceramics saw their MVL crossover in McLuney suspended after nine innings due to darkness.

No resumption date has been announced.

Watkins Memorial 13, Zanesville 0: Tyson Kimble and Caleb Underwood had the lone hits for the host Blue Devils in a Licking County League-Buckeye Division loss at Jay Payton Field.

Luke Smith picked up the win for Watkins, allowing two hits in five innings. Trent Johnson drove in four runs to pace the Warrior offense.

Layne McBrayer suffered the loss.

Morgan 9, Beverly Fort Frye 5: Owen McCoy's big week continued with a second-inning grand slam in the Raiders' nonleague win in McConnelsville.

McCoy, who also singled, helped Morgan (6-3) build a 6-1 lead after two innings despite committing three errors in the second inning.

Carson Mummey added a double and Witten Schaad an RBI single for Morgan, which took a 9-1 lead into the seventh. The Raiders had five hits and took advantage of four Cadet fielding miscues.

Rance Eddleblute went the distance to get the win. He allowed five hits, walked one and yielded no earned runs.

Granville 6, Ridgewood 4: The visiting Generals (1-9) built a 2-0 lead after two innings, but they couldn't overcome three errors and quiet offense in the final four innings in a nonleague loss.

Cohen Parsons allowed seven hits and four earned runs in five innings to take the loss. He walked two and struck out one.

Grant Lahmers and Robert Gaston had two singles and Brody Harding drew three walks for Ridgewood.

Theo Talbott had two singles and Cooper Silverman, Jacob Smith and Cy Sims had doubles for Granville. Jakob Culver tossed three scoreless innings of relief to get the win.

Gnadenhutten Indian Valley 18, Coshocton 10: Parker Loomis drove in four runs in a losing cause for the Redskins in a nonleague loss at Lake Park.

Coshocton trailed 12-0 after two innings but rallied to close within 15-6 after five to avoid the mercy. The Skins scored thrice more in the sixth but their comeback bid fell short.

Coby Moore doubled and singled with an RBI and also drew a walk for Coshocton; Evan Unger doubled home a run and walked twice and Loomis, Gage Wright and Cody George had two singles.

Six pitchers saw action for Coshocton (1-10), including two scoreless innings from J.J. Herman. The teams combined to allow 25 hits and 17 walks.

Cambridge 11, Warren 1: The Bobcats hit the road on Thursday night and returned home with the Buckeye 8 Conference victory

Dawson Geese drew the assignment on the mound for the Bobcats and turned in a solid effort to collect the win. Dawson racked up 11 strikeouts, walked two and surrendering an unearned run.

Seniors Regan Rogers and Keaton Kyser led the Cambridge (7-1) offense with two hits each. Rogers also scored three runs and drove in four runs in the game.

Boys Tennis

Cambridge 5, 7, St. Clairsville 0, 0: The Bobcats picked up a sweep of doubleheader action with the Red Devils on Friday to improve to a sparkling 9-2 on the year.

In the opening 5-0 win it was Markel Villapalos collecting a forfeit win at one singles. Blade Bachmann took second singles 6-0, 6-0 over Jack Koontz and Caleb Stanberry defeated Jackson Dutton 6-1, 6-0 in third singles action.

Cambridge's first doubles team of James Goggin and Smith Sylvis blanked Luke Swan and Marius Trouten 6-0, 6-0. Second doubles went to the Bobcats' Baylon Rose and Jacob Vincent with another shutout 6-0, 6-0 win over Ethan Kyser and Addy Cooey.

In the second match, the teams played with an OVAC format. Villapalos won at one singles, Bachmann took an 8-0 win at second. Stanberry won 8-1 at third singles. Goggin picked up the dub at fourth singles 8-2.

Winning at one doubles was Bachmann and Stanberry. Second doubles Villapalos and Goggin 8-0. Third doubles Sylvis and Vincent 8-0 to finish the match.

Lacrosse

John Glenn 18, Hilliard Bradley 8: The Muskies improved to 5-5 on the season with Thursday night's road victory.

The host Jags jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first two minutes, before goals by the Muskies' Cannon Fox and Evan Haney closed the gap and JG trailed 3-2 at the end of the first.

"We continue to struggle at the onset of games and I’m glad to see the players maintain composure, settle it, and battle back," John Glenn head coach Bob Williams said. "It was great to see our offense move the ball so well tonight. Everyone got involved and we are at our best when we are able to have quick ball movements."

Max Morrow tallied a game high seven goals with one assist to lead the Muskies, with Fox and Haney each finishing with three goals and one assist. Clay Hanna added two goals, two assists and Liam Clinard collected one assist.

John Glenn's defensive effort was paced by Mason Williams' two goals, two assists, six takeaways, while Jack Crutchfield added takeaways. Nic Xanders chipped in with five takeaways, Tristan Dunlap with four takeaways andAiden Gamble picked up a goal and four takeaways. Golf Leagues looking for players: Some area leagues are looking for players as leagues get started.

The Vista Senior League Practice Round will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 25, and the league starts at 9 a.m. May 2 and runs through Sept. 5. League fees are $50 and is for senior men 55 or older with a format of a 2-man, 9-hole handicapped league. There are two divisions and points are awarded weekly. The Thursday morning Zanesville Friends Women’s League is looking for golfers. The league begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at Green Valley Golf Club. This league is different from most leagues as you do not have to be there every week, play when you can be there.
