Franklin alum Katia Gallegos set to play for Mexico at FIBA AmeriCup

Katia Gallegos is representing Mexico again.

The Franklin alum and senior point guard at Tulsa was selected to the 12-player Mexican national team roster and will compete at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023 from July 1-9 in Leon, Mexico.

Mexico opens the tournament July 1 against the Dominican Republic. The 17th edition of the biannual event serves as the championship for the Americas and features six teams from North America and the Caribbean and four teams from South America.

"Basketball has always been a love in my life and it truly is an honor to represent Mexico and to represent the University of Tulsa on an international level," Gallegos said. "I am also excited as Mexico will be hosting the tournament and I can't wait to be part of such an impacting event on women's basketball in Mexico."

The senior guard is healthy after battling injuries last season that limited her to 20 games in her first year at Tulsa, but she did set the program record in free-throw percentage (93.8%). She averaged 2.3 points per game and 1.7 assists per game. She began her college career at UTEP and played three seasons.

This will be Gallegos' third stint with the Mexican national team and her first with the senior team. She also played for Mexico in the FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship in Mexico City in 2018 and the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2016.
