Framingham High boys hockey coach resigns after three seasons

Dan Riva, a former player who won a state championship with the program, has resigned as Framingham High’s boys hockey coach, athletic director Paul Spear announced on Monday. Riva, a 1993 FHS graduate, coached the Flyers since 2021.

Framingham finished 9-11-1 last season, falling to fourth-seeded Xaverian in the MIAA Division 1 Round of 32. The Flyers won the Ed Cahoon Memorial Cup Tournament at the Ice Palace in February.

Riva replaced Will Ortiz, another former Flyer, who was coach since 2016. Both played for Spear, who led the program from 1999-2016.

“Dan executed his duties as coach in a professional manner at all times,” Spear said in a text to the Daily News. “He treated players respectfully, and showed up prepared each day.”

Riva began his high school career playing at Framingham South, which merged with Framingham North after his sophomore year in 1991. Framingham High won the Division 1 state title, as a No. 20 seed, a year later at Boston Garden, defeating Burlington, 8-4.

Riva played at RPI and professionally until 2004.

Noah Albright was a senior captain on this year's team and said he was a "great coach.

"He came into the job not knowing any of the kids and he immediately started to build connections with us," Albright continued. "He always taught us to be smart and respectful and how to play hockey the right way."

Spear said the school will begin accepting applications shortly for Riva’s replacement and plans to name a new coach in early June.

“We wish Dan the best of luck and thank him for working with the students of Framingham High School.”
