Fowlerville's Tori Briggs commits to Central Michigan softball

It will be more than a year before Fowlerville junior Tori Briggs has to finalize her choice of college softball programs, but she saw no sense in waiting.

Briggs, an All-Livingston County first-team selection as a freshman and sophomore, has verbally committed to attend Central Michigan University on a softball scholarship.

“There was something about Central that just made me love it more,” Briggs said. “I just knew it was a great fit for me. If I know, I didn’t want to waste my time or anyone else’s time when that’s the place I wanted to be.”

Central wasn’t always Briggs’ preference. Her older sister attended CMU, but Briggs initially wanted to carve her own path.

“Honestly, at first I didn’t want to go to CMU, because my sister went there,” Briggs said. “I went to a softball camp there in 2021 and I loved it. I got to visit the campus and facilities and hit it off with the coaches and players. I went to a few more camps. I definitely put it on my list after I went to those camps. After I went to more college campuses, I realized CMU was the best fit for me.”

Briggs is familiar with the school from visiting her sister at CMU for siblings’ day. She is also familiar with players on the team who came from the same travel program, which will make the transition to college two years from now easier.

“I’ll be joining some amazing players I’ve known from my program through T2,” she said. “Maddie Springer is a shortstop from Howell and I’m teammates with Brooklyn Compau, who is a 2023 pitcher from Frankenmuth. I’m quite familiar with people going there.”

With 118 career hits through two seasons, Briggs is on pace to finish in the top 15 in state history. She has hit .544 with 25 doubles, 14 triples, nine homers and 73 RBIs in her first two years, scoring 110 runs.

Briggs led Livingston County with a .553 average, 68 hits, 20 doubles, seven triples and 61 runs as a sophomore.

Briggs plays outfield in travel ball and has played shortstop and some catcher for Fowlerville. With Fowlerville graduating its two pitchers, Briggs will likely see time in the circle next spring.

“I pitched when I used to play for Hang Tough, 12U and 14U,” Briggs said. “Then when I got to T2, it was better competition. I wasn’t the best pitcher. I kind of just did it because I had to. I just needed to help my teammates out to become a better team, but when I got to T2, those positions were filled with better pitchers. So, I helped my team out being an outfielder, and I love it.”
