Four Cape golfers compete in Cape Cod National High School Invitational

BREWSTER – A persistent rain and blustery winds off the nearby Atlantic Ocean produced very challenging scoring conditions Sunday afternoon at the 7th annual Cape Cod National High School Invitational golf tournament.

The CCN Invitational takes place each September and brings together the top high school golf teams and individuals from the state of Massachusetts.

There were four individual golfers from Cape Cod schools who competed. Jack Martin of Nauset Regional had the best score of the quartet with an 82. Martin was followed by Colin Gleason of Barnstable with an 84, Chad Tordone, also from Barnstable, finished with an 85, and Jack Carstensen of St. John Paul II shot an 89.

“It means a lot to us," assistant Red Hawks golf coach Greg Everson said about having two golfers compete. "It’s such a prestigious tournament. We’re honored and proud to have two of our guys here.”

The team from St. John’s Prep of Danvers took it all in stride on their way to winning the tournament.

St. John’s Prep shot 231 and was led by senior captain Terry Manning, whose round of two-over par 74 included an eagle and three birdies.

“I’m very proud of Terry and the entire team," St, John Prep's coach Brian Jasiak said beaming afterwards.

"This is an incredible accomplishment,” Manning added. "This gives us a lot of confidence heading into Sectionals and hopefully States. I’m very proud of my underclassmen teammates for their fine play today.”

SJP’s other scores were a 78 from Seamus O’Holleran, a 79 from Jack Carew and an 83 from Brian Loughlin. Each team fields four players, with the top three scores counting towards the team total.

Sioux Campbell Memorial Trophy awarded

With the victory, St. John’s Prep takes home the Sioux Campbell Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late wife of former CCN head golf professional Jim Campbell.

“It’s a great day here at Cape Cod National. It’s fantastic to honor the memory of Sioux and to see so many fantastic young golfers," CCN general manager Michael Walker said.

Hingham High School finished second at 232, only one shot back. Drew Golden’s 76 was best for Hingham, followed by Carson Erick and J D Flynn both with 78s.

Bishop Stang finished in third place at 238, yet the Spartans produced the Invitational’s individual champion in Matt Costello, who fired a splendid 73.

“These were tough weather conditions all day, so I just took it one shot at a time, never getting ahead of myself”, said Costello, who also had high praise for the golf course. “Cape Cod National is awesome. Unbelievable shape, perfect greens."

Trailing St. John’s Prep, Hingham and Bishop Stang were Winchester (238), St. John’s of Shrewsbury (238), defending champion Wellesley (247), Xaverian (248), BC High (252), Concord Carlisle (253), Weston (255) and Old Rochester (270).
