Fort Worth-area 2023-2024 girls basketball individual awards: Player of the Year, more

It’s high school basketball awards week at the Star-Telegram, and we’re announcing the 2023-2024 girls basketball individual awards recipients.

Girls basketball Player of the Year: Boswell’s Camille Williams

Boswell girls basketball made it to the regional finals, and junior Camille Williams played a monumental role in catapulting the Pioneers to success.

Williams, a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 6A All-Region and All-State selection, averaged a team high 19.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

“She does everything,” said Boswell head coach John Reese, the 2023-24 Fort Worth-area coach of the year. “She is a winner. And I just love coaching her. She doesn’t care about scoring. She cares about winning. She cares about her teammates.”

Williams was named the District 3-6A Most Valuable Player, leading her team to a second place finish behind Crowley.

Although Williams is a top player for Boswell, Reese said she isn’t afraid to do the “dirty work” and get scrappy. He added she stays late, shows up early, and leads by example without being overly vocal.

“She gets on the floor, she rebounds,” Reese said. “When you have your best player working the hardest, those other kids buy in.”

Reese said he expects more from Williams in her senior season following an MVP caliber junior year. He expects the rest of the team to follow the standard Williams sets.

“She won’t back down,” Reese said. “She’ll embrace that role. She’ll put the team on her back. Her expectations are the same as ours. We’ve set the bar high here and we’re not gonna lower the bar. We’re gonna raise expectations.”

Offensive Player of the Year: Carroll’s Milania Jordan

Southlake Carroll girls basketball had a historic year, finishing with a 31-6 record and a perfect 12-0 record in District 4-6A. Milania Jordan was a staple in the Dragon’s success, claiming the District 4-6A Most Valuable Player.

The star junior guard was a Class 6A All-Region and All-State selection. Milania can score in a variety of ways, but Southlake Carroll head coach Robyn McCoart said her midrange jumpshot stands out.

“We count on her for her offensive production,” McCourt said. “She plays fast. She plays hard. And she really helps set the tempo for our team because she’s always running the floor and getting out in open court.”

Milania Jordan has offers from SMU, George Mason, LaSalle and Abilene Christian. She averaged 18 points per game, leading the Dragons to the regional semifinals.

McCoart said she holds teammates accountable, which raises the standard of Southlake Carroll basketball. She added that no one outworks Milania Jordan.

“She’s one of our captains,” McCoart said. “Something that people wouldn’t see on the outside is that she has really high expectations of herself. Right when we start stretching, she is dialed in. She stretches like she plays games. She does a great job being a great leader for our program.”

Milania Jordan is the older sister of Gianna, Natalia and Nadia Jordan. According to McCoart, Milania Jordan is putting up 500 shots per day in preparation for next season.

“I’m just excited for her senior year so she can continue to build on what she’s done,” McCoart said. “She’s already in the offseason working hard.”

Co-Newcomer of the Year: Southlake Carroll’s Nadia Jordan

The awards keep rolling in for Southlake Carroll girls basketball.

Nadia Jordan, the youngest of the Jordan sisters, made a sizable impact in her freshmen season and made the District 4-6A first team. According to McCoart, Nadia Jordan’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet.

“I think it’s challenging because we have a whole team of talented players,” McCoart said. “If any one of those players were on a team without that supporting cast, their stats would be inflated.”

Nadia shared the court with Milania Jordan and Natalia Jordan who were both All-Region caliber stars. She averaged 7.7 points during the Dragons’ playoff run and often accepted the top defensive assignment, shutting down opposing stars with energetic and tenacious defense.

In the regional final against South Grand Prairie, Nadia scored seven points. It was a hard, deflating loss for the Dragons but Nadia Jordan’s unwavering energy and competitiveness was a bright spot.

“She’s coming in and she’s defending anyone that we asked her to defend,” McCoart said. “She doesn’t back down from anyone. She doesn’t act like a freshman.”

McCoart said Nadia Jordan made an impact with her toughness and play running abilities.

“She doesn’t back down,” McCoart said. “She makes everyone believe that we’re not backing down. The sky is the limit for her. ... Her ability to defend and move on the court and play at that intensity for an entire game -- it’s unreal. She’ll be fun to watch over the next three years.”

Co-Newcomer of the Year: Boswell’s Sydney Durrah

Sydney Durrah was a force for Boswell, averaging 14 points, a team high 3.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game.

The star freshman was especially effective in the playoffs, where she averaged 16.6 to help lead the Pioneers to a regional final.

Durrah did a bit of everything, making her presence known on the defensive end with 2.7 steals per game. She also made 65 three pointers throughout the season, stretching the floor for Boswell.

Reese said Durrah’s dedication to basketball makes her stand out. He said her defensive abilities are so strong that she gets in opposing player’s heads.

“She works hard,” Reese said. “She is the engine. She spearheads us. We’re driven by defense and … she picks up the ball 94 feet and allows us to do what we do defensively. … It sets the tone for us and sets the tone early.”

Reese also credited Durrah for an ability to drive and kick, which gave life to Boswell’s shooting oriented offense. Although Durrah is undersized, Reese said her physicality and effort makes her special.

Defensive Player of the Year: Timberview’s Crishawn Coleman

Mansfield Timberview had a phenomenal season, making it to the Class 5A state championship.

Seniro guard Crishawn Coleman played a big role in the Wolves’ stellar 40-2 record and undefeated district play run. Coleman led Timberview with 12.9 points and 4.7 assists per game.
