Fort Collins basketball coach Bruce Dick to be inducted into Colorado Coaches Hall of Fame

A Colorado basketball legend is heading to the Hall of Fame.

Fort Collins boys basketball coach Bruce Dick will be inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the Class of 2024, CHSCA announced Wednesday.

"I’m not usually one to lack words, but it's quite humbling," Dick said Wednesday morning. "I’m happy and very honored to be included in the Hall of Fame."

Dick is one of Colorado's most prolific coaches, reaching the 700-win mark last season, winning a state title in 1992 and owning a career record of 714-227 in 40 seasons.

Those 714 wins place him fourth on Colorado's all-time high school basketball coaching wins list.

He's won everywhere he's been, including his latest stop at Fort Collins.

The Lambkins went 22-4, won the Front Range League and reached the Great 8 last season in Dick's second year, turning around a program that had gone 24-60 from 2018-2021.

Dick, 71, began his coaching career at Green Mountain, serving four seasons as an assistant. He took over as head coach in 1982 and spent 23 seasons there, making 10 state tournaments and winning the 1992 state championship.

In 2005, he came to Northern Colorado as Rocky Mountain's head coach. Dick led the Lobos to the state tournament three times in five seasons, including a 2008 Great 8 appearance.

A decade at Resurrection Christian followed and it was another successful tenure, as RCS reached the Great 8 six times and finished as state runner-ups in 2015 and 2016.

The Cougars also had an unbeaten 2019-20 season canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, just two wins from Dick's long-awaited second state championship.

Despite that track record, Dick said he certainly wasn't expecting the news.

"You look around at how many great coaches there are who don’t get honored like this," he said. "So you’re never anticipating an honor like this."

Dick's teams are known for playing an aggressive, up-tempo style that puts opponents on their heels and allows for a high-octane offense.

Dick is the second Northern Colorado coach in as many years to enter the CHSCA Hall of Fame. Legendary Windsor volleyball coach LaVerne Huston was inducted in the Class of 2023.

The induction ceremony will be held on April 15, 2024, at Legacy Campus Great Hall in Lone Tree. Tickets to the event will be available for purchase at www.colohsca.org after Jan. 1, 2024.
