Former West Monroe coach Todd Garvin gains release from Ouachita Parish teaching contract
Although West Monroe coach Todd Garvin was fired from his position as football coach Tuesday, he was still under his teaching contract with the district on Wednesday.
That changed Wednesday afternoon, according to Ouachita Parish Superintendent Todd Guice.
“Coach Garvin this afternoon has been released from his contract and resigned from the district,” Guice told the News Star.
That means Garvin could be available to join the football staff at another North Louisiana school, such as Ruston, where he previously coached.

“We haven’t hired him,” Ruston principal Dan Gressett told the News Star before learning Garvin was no longer employed in any capacity by the adjoining parish. “He’d have to be released from Ouachita Parish for us to even be able to. To my knowledge he is still employed in Ouachita Parish.”
Northeast Louisiana school systems have an agreement about hiring from a neighboring school district.
“We have an agreement between districts that we do not hire from one another after Aug. 1 unless both districts agree on the resignation/hire,” Guice said.
Garvin was fired after at least four of his West Monroe players were sent to the hospital with heat related issues. He came to WMHS after two years as the Ouachita Parish football coach. He was previously an assistant coach at both West Monroe and Ruston High.
