Former OU softball coach Marita Hynes among Putnam City's 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame class

Putnam City Schools announced its 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame class on Thursday.

Former OU softball coach Marita Hynes is among the 12 people who will be inducted at the ceremony and dinner, which is set for the evening of Aug. 26 at Victory Church (4300 N. Macarthur Blvd.).

The 1977 Putnam City football team, which won the program’s third state title, will also be inducted. It will be the first football team in the school district’s hall of fame.

Here’s a look at the inductees, who are chosen by a committee of administrators, former athletes and coaches.

Putnam City

Mark Anderson (diving): A four-time state champion diver, he will be inducted posthumously. Anderson broke the high score state record in each of his seasons at Putnam City and was an All-American at Princeton in 1972.

Kenneth Cooper (basketball, cross country, track and field): A doctor, Cooper coined the term “aerobics” and is a pioneer of cardiovascular exercise. He was a standout athlete at Putnam City and ran cross country and track at OU.

Marita Hynes (coach): Hynes was at Putnam City as a coach and teacher when the school introduced female sports. She coached four sports in five years at Putnam City before heading to OU, where she coached softball and field hockey. She became an associate athletic director at OU in 1995, and the Sooners' previous softball field was named in her honor in 2004.

Lou Kretlow (baseball): The late Kretlow graduated from Putnam City in 1941. He pitched at OU and also in Major League Baseball for 10 seasons.

Putnam North

Todd Fereday (baseball, football): He played quarterback at Putnam North and thrived on the diamond before graduating in 1993 and continuing his baseball career at Kansas State, where he left with three program records.

Chris Haworth (tennis): The most accomplished tennis player in the history of Putnam City Schools, he won Class 6A state championships as a sophomore, junior and senior and went 100-5 in high school. After that, Haworth played at Oklahoma State.

Aaron Ivey (baseball, football): He played baseball at OU and was also a standout receiver in high school and was named The Oklahoman’s Big All-City Offensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2001. As a Sooner, he was named ESPN The Magazine’s National Academic All-American of the Year in baseball in 2007.

Lance Parker (soccer): He’s the first boys soccer player to be inducted into Putnam City’s Athletics Hall of Fame. Parker starred at Putnam North before continuing his career at Missouri State. He played professional soccer for seven seasons and competed for Chivas USA in Major League Soccer for two seasons.

Putnam West

Gladys Griffin (softball): She helped Putnam West win two state championships and was a four-time All-American at Central Oklahoma, where she was inducted to its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.

Carrie (Heightley) Schimmels (basketball, softball): A Putnam West star in the 1980s, she played softball at Texas A&M and won a national championship in 1987.

Ben Rutz (baseball, football): He played for Putnam West in the 1990s and is its record holder in passing yards, touchdown passes, completions and completion percentage. Rutz began his college career at Nebraska before heading to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M then Kansas, where he was a starting quarterback.

Tim Sydnes (basketball, football, soccer): A three-sport star for the Patriots, Sydnes was a standout kicker on the football team and was a starter at Oklahoma State for four seasons.
