Randy Gradishar, who played linebacker at Ohio State before embarking on a distinguished 10-year NFL career with the Denver Broncos, was named Wednesday as one of three Seniors Finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Gradishar, 71, is joined by Chicago Bears interior lineman Steve McMichael and AFL receiver Art Powell, who played for the New York Titans and Oakland Raiders. The three candidates will enter the hall if they are supported by at least 80% of voters at the January meeting. Based on history, election is almost guaranteed.

Gradishar was a three-year starter and two-time All-American for the Buckeyes (1971-73) before Denver selected him with the 14th pick in the 1974 NFL draft. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1978.

"It's been a long time waiting," Gradishar said last week. "I've been a finalist and semifinalist before. Last year it got to 12, then six and I wasn't part of the three who got in. It would be a great honor to be included in that. I've been waiting so long, if it works out great."

Gradishar grew up in Warren and attended Champion High School before playing for Woody Hayes, who called him "The greatest linebacker I ever coached."

In Denver, he was a key part of the "Orange Crush" defense in the 1970s, making the Pro Bowl seven times and being named All-Pro in 1977 and 1978. A ferocious tackler, he also showed skill as a "receiver," with 20 interceptions to go with 13 recovered fumbles over a career in which he never missed a game. He was a modern-era finalist for the Hall in 2003 and 2008 but did not get elected.
