Former Ohio State golf coach to speak at HOJGA Banquet in Marion

MARION − The Heart of Ohio Junior Golf Association announced Therese Hession, former Ohio State University women’s golf coach, will be the guest speaker at the HOJGA Year-End Awards Banquet on July 27 at Kings Mill.

Hession coached the Buckeyes from 1991 to 2018 and was named to the OSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. She was named National Golf Coach of the Year in 2014 by Golf Week and in 1997 by National Golf Coaches Association. She was Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2014.

Hession also served as OSU director of Men’s and Women’s Golf programs from 2018 to 2022 and recently retired in January to complete 30 years at the university.

On LPGA tour for 11 years

In earlier years, Hession joined the LPGA tour in 1980 and played on the circuit for 11 years after graduating from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1979. Her best season came in 1984 when she finished fourth in the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic. In 1985, she recorded her best career round of 66 in the opening round of Rail Charity Golf Classic.

Hession’s career accomplishments at the helm at Ohio State include being a two-time NCAA Coach of the Year, coaching six Big Ten Players of the Year and being named a seven-time Big Ten Coach of the Year.

She coached eight Big Ten Freshmen of the Year, 11 Big Ten championships, 13 All-Americans, 15 Big Ten Tournament medalists;,17 NCAA Championship appearances; 18 Big Ten Tournament titles; 26 NCAA regional appearances; 47 tournament championships; 48 All-American scholars; 68 All-Big Ten honorees, 134 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and 190 OSU Scholar Athletes.

"I am so grateful to the many student athletes of both men and women’s golf for their tireless work and dedication to our programs both academically as well as athletically,” Hession said in a statement released by the school. “It was a privilege to be a small part of your life both on and off the golf course.”
