Former Mets ace Jacob deGrom to miss 'another two to three weeks' due to elbow inflammation

Apr 28, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (48) is visited on the mound by teammates and pitching coach pitching coach Mike Maddux (31) before leaving the game in the fourth inning against the New York Yankees at Globe Life Field.

Jacob deGrom’s tenure with the Texas Rangers has gotten off to a good start numbers-wise, but the injury bug has already bitten the former Mets ace.

The 34-year-old right-hander has gotten off to a nice start, pitching to a 2.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 30.1 innings, but he exited his last start against the Yankees after 3.2 innings due to elbow inflammation, and it doesn’t sound like he’ll be back on the mound until around the start of June at the earliest.

Placed on the IL on April 30 with what was originally called right forearm tightness and then right elbow inflammation, deGrom is eligible to come off the 15-day IL this Sunday, but Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters on Wednesday that the right-hander is looking at “another two to three weeks” before he could potentially return.

DeGrom, who signed a five-year, $185 million deal with the Rangers this offseason, also left his April 17 start against the Kansas City Royals due to right wrist soreness, though he ended up making his next scheduled start.

And just for the curious Mets fans out there, the Rangers are scheduled to play at Citi Field at the end of August, which would mark deGrom's first trip back to Queens.
