A former Louisville basketball assistant coach is taking over at Collegiate

A former University of Louisville assistant basketball coach is back in the city, and he's looking to shake things up at the high school level.

Mark Lieberman — who coached the Cardinals alongside Rick Pitino from 2010 to 2012 — accepted the boys' basketball head coaching job at Collegiate on May 5. Lieberman had spent the last three years as associate head coach at Southeastern Louisiana University.

After helping to lead the Lions to the Southland Conference tournament championship game last season, Lieberman is bringing a wealth of coaching experience back to Louisville. And while he's excited to keep coaching, getting closer to his daughter Emery, who still lived in the city, is Lieberman's favorite part of the deal.

"I love the city of Louisville and I just wanted to be around Emery and be a part of her life," Lieberman said. "So then Collegiate calls me about the situation ... I got to see what their vision was and I shared mine and it was a great fit."

The Titans finished last season 11-17, ending their campaign with a loss to St. Xavier in the 26th District Playoffs. The Tigers and Male, two local powerhouses who share a division with Collegiate, have been a big reason why the Titans haven't reached the regional tournament since 2011.

Lieberman hopes to change that. And Collegiate has already started preparing for next season.

Like many other high school teams, the Titans have been active in summer tournaments and workouts. Leading scorer Alioune Gaye (16 ppg) has graduated, but the Titans are expecting other key pieces to return.

"I think we've got a pretty good team," Lieberman said. "As far as expectations, I don't like to label anything, I just want us to get incrementally better. I always tell them 'we're just going to improve every day.'"

One of Lieberman's first moves at Collegiate has been implementing and strength and conditioning program. After all, winning basketball in the winter starts with the work in the summer.

"I've always said that winning is not normal, " Lieberman said. "It's very hard to do things you need to do to win. There's so many parts that you have to work on every day and I'm excited about seeing what we can do."
