Former Detroit Lions QB David Blough joins Washington Commanders coaching staff

David Blough is giving up his quarterback dreams to begin coaching.

Blough, who spent most of last season on the Detroit Lions practice squad, was announced Thursday as the Washington Commanders' new assistant quarterbacks coach.

He joins former Lions executive Lance Newmark with the team. Newmark was hired Wednesday as the Commanders' assistant general manager.

Blough, 28, made five starts as an injury replacement for Matthew Stafford in 2019 and has never hid his interest in coaching.

He told the Free Press during the season he wanted to be the first ever offensive coordinator for the Colombia national team, when flag football becomes an Olympic sport in 2028. Blough's wife Melissa, was a hurdler for Colombia in the 2021 Olympics.

Asked at the time if he planned to be an NFL coach one day, Blough winked and said, "We’ll see."

Blough, an undrafted rookie out of Purdue who signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2019, spent parts of five seasons with the Lions after the team acquired him in a trade at the end of his first training camp.

He appeared in one game each in the 2020-21 seasons, and made two starts for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022, when new Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was the team's head coach.

He completed 138 of 242 passes for his career (57%) with six touchdowns and nine interceptions, losing all seven career starts.
