Football Notebook: Pennfield, St. Philip open the season with wins

LAKEWOOD - New Pennfield head coach Robbie Hatton earned his first Panther win in his first try.

Pennfield defeated Lakewood Lake Odessa, 34-13, in the season opener in high school football action at Lakewood Lake Odessa High School on Friday.

"It was great. You want to get the first win out of the way," Hatton said. "This community is very eager to support a winning program. So getting that first win was nice.

"But we don't want the highlight of the season to be winning just one football game, so we are going to get back after it this week."

Pennfield went 0-9 last year as the Panther win over Lakewood ended a 10-game losing streak.

Je'Shawn Clark led the way with two touchdown catches, coming up with 88 total receiving yards. Senior running back Kaiden Guthrie had 80 yards rushing on 13 carries and added 57 yards receiving.

Pennfield rotated two quarterbacks with Calvin Paesans throwing a touchdown pass and Braden Campbell adding two scoring tosses. Dre'Shawn Bailey had 107 yards receiving and a touchdown and Brendan Back added a TD catch. Isaiah Adams rounded out the scoring with a punt return for a touchdown.
