Football: What would the FHSAA brackets look like if the playoffs started today?

The Florida High School Athletic Assocation released its first power rankings of the 2023 season on Tuesday afternoon.

Some of the results were expected, while others were downright shocking.

Here are some of the quick highlights ...

Nationally ranked Chaminade-Madonna is the No. 1 overall team in the state with a rating of 21.38. The Lions are 5-0 with all five wins coming against nationally ranked opponents. St. Thomas Aquinas is No. 2 with a rating of 16.091.

The No. 1 overall ranked teams in each class are Palm Beach Central (Class 4M), Aquinas (3M), Norland (2M), Chaminade (1M), Buchholz (4S), Mainland (3S), Fort Meade (2S), Community School of Naples (1S) and Williston (1R).

The ratings, which are computer-generated, look far different from the USA Today Florida Network High School Football poll. Here's where the top-ranked team in each class appears in the power rankings. Columbus (Class 4M No. 1 USA Today is No. 3 in the 4M power rankings), Aquinas (3M No. 1 in both), Miami Central (Class 2M No. 1 USA Today; No. 7 2M power ranking), Chaminade (1M No. 1 in both), Lakeland (Class 4S No. 1 USA Today; No. 17 4S power ranking), Mainland (3S No. 1 in both), Cocoa (Class 2S No. 1 USA Today; No. 7 2S power ranking), Cardinal Mooney (1S No. 1 USA Today; No. 5 1S power ranking); Hawthorne (1R No. 1 USA Today; No. 2 1R power rankings).

Cocoa, which lost a controversial game at St. Thomas Aquinas in Week 3, is No. 7 in Class 2S. The Tigers have the highest strength of schedule in 2S and the Aquinas loss is the only blemish on the team's record. All the teams ahead of Cocoa are undefeated. It's a big reminder that the power rankings value wins much more than strength of schedule. Jones being the No. 9 team in Region 1-3M also reinforces the point.

Here's a look at what the matchups would look like if the playoffs started today.
