Fondy boys basketball tames Oshkosh West Wildcats in 20-point road victory, led by Braatz

Here is a look at Friday's high school sports action in the area.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fond du Lac 66, Oshkosh West 46

OSHKOSH - The Cardinals (10-7, 8-4 Fox Valley Association) recovered from a bit of a slow start to jump out to a 16-point lead over the Wildcats (6-13, 3-10) at the half, getting solid contributions from the bench.

Fondy's lead grew to as many as 25 points after the break before West went on a run to trim the deficit to just 14. The Cardinals held on though, inflating their advantage back to an even 20 for a blowout win over an FVA rival.

Eli Braatz scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Fondy. Marvin Haslett III and Rocky Barfknecht each chipped in with 12 points for the Cardinals.

Haslett III buried a game-high three 3-pointers and Barfknecht had a team-high four assists.

Joey Ware led Oshkosh West with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Winnebago Lutheran 75, Campbellsport 34

CAMPBELLSPORT - The Vikings (13-5, 9-1) blew out the Cougars (3-14, 1-9) to remain within a game of Omro for first place in the Flyway conference.

Noah Gensler was on fire from 3-point range, draining eight from distance to finish with a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double to lead WLA.

Gannan Schwartz added 12 points and Sam Loehr had 11 points with both contributing a team-high four assists each.

Ethan Pickering led Campbellsport with 10 points and three blocks. Jace Goebel and Braden Bothe each chipped in with six points for the Cougars.

Laconia 56, St. Mary's Springs 51

ROSENDALE - The Spartans (9-8, 5-5) pulled away just enough in a tight ballgame to defeat the Ledgers (10-8, 5-5) after being tied at the half, evening their record in the Flyway with the win.

Cash Farrell led Laconia with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and five steals. Ethan Pinno added 15 points for the Spartans on 3-of-6 shooting beyond the arc while also dishing out three assists with a pair of steals.

Keeton Grade nearly had a double-double with seven points and 13 rebounds.

Noah Moul scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double with four steals and two blocks to lead Springs. John Coon followed with 12 points, seven boards, five assists and three blocks for the Ledgers.

Mayville 78, North Fond du Lac 54

MAYVILLE - The Cardinals (3-14, 3-7 Flyway) picked up a blowout victory over the winless Orioles (0-18, 0-10).

Joren Schlender led Mayville with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Braden Drinkwine followed with four three-pointers on his way to 16 points for the Cardinals and Cohen Raddemann added three 3-pointers for nine points with a team-high seven rebounds and five assists.

Oakfield 55, Westfield 42

WESTFIELD - The Oaks (12-4, 7-2 Trailways-East) extended their overall winning streak to eight games with the non-conference win over the Pioneers (6-12, 2-4 South Central).

Davis Dercks scored 17 points and six rebounds to lead Oakfield. Mitchell Moser added 11 points and Hunter Sabel had 10 points with five assists and a pair of steals for the Oaks.

Sam Berruecos led Westfield with a game-high 18 points and four steals. Keegan Hockerman followed with 10 points, six boards and two steals for the Pioneers.

Omro 71, Lomira 54

LOMIRA - The Lions (11-7, 7-3) fell to the first-place Foxes (14-3, 10-0) in a battle amongst two of the top three teams in the Flyway.

Jake Broeske scored a game-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers and 20 in the second half, to lead Lomira.

Connor Steers added 11 points for the Lions, all in the first half.

Mason Huth led Omro with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Mason Gruss followed with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and three steals for the Foxes and the duo of Keenan Rahn and Ryan Schoeni each had 12 points.

Rahn also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double and collected four steals while Schoeni added three steals, as well. Huth, Rahn and Schoeni each sank a pair of threes to complement Gruss's shooting from behind the arc.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Oshkosh West 62, Fond du Lac 53

FOND DU LAC - The Cardinals (5-15, 2-12 Fox Valley Association) fell to the Wildcats (12-8, 8-6) by double-digits.

Brooke Butler led Fondy with 23 points, including 10-of-11 at the free throw line, and grabbed five rebounds.

Lilly Kejo added 11 points, with a team-high seven boards, and dished out three assists for the Cardinals and Amaria Kejo had nine points, six rebounds.

Paige Seckar countered with a game-high 25 points, including 10-of-13 from the charity stripe and 3-for-5 from three-point land, and grabbed eight rebounds to lead West.

Laina Hammen followed with 16 points, on 3-for-6 shooting from behind the arc, four rebounds and two steals.

Central Wisconsin Christian 39, Williams Bay 26

WAUPUN - The Crusaders (8-11, 4-7 Trailways-East) defeated the Bulldogs (2-15, 2-7 Trailways-South).

Tabitha Buwalda led CWC with 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary's Springs 4, Homestead 1

FOND DU LAC - The Ledgers (14-8, 6-1 Badgerland) defeated the Highlanders (13-8, 4-5 Classic Eight) and will next face off against Fond du Lac in the Badgerland conference championship game Saturday afternoon.

Quinn McLaughlin claimed the first goal of the game on an assist from Gabe Braun to open the scoring for Springs in the first period.

Ben Waraksa responded for Homestead a few minutes later with a goal on the power play, assisted by Sean West.

Not to be outdone, the Ledgers would go on to net each of their next three goals - two in the second period and one in the third - all on the power play.

Tate Baker, on assists from Isaac Sabel and Teigue Wagner, claimed the first one. Braun chipped in with the second goal on assists from Austin Westergaard and Sabel. Finally, Westergaard sealed the win for Springs on Sabel's third assist of the night.

Brendan Gaertig made 27 saves for the Ledgers and Connor O'Brien had 29 saves for the Highlanders.

Fond du Lac 2, Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha 1 - (2 OT, Shootout)

FOND DU LAC - Although the game will officially go down as a tie in the WIAA record books, Fondy (11-7-2, 6-1-1) will be moving on to face St. Mary's Springs in the Badgerland conference championship game Saturday afternoon.Neenah (13-8-1, 6-1-1) struck quickly just over a minute into the game on a Cartyr Simonson goal, assisted by Ben Carey and Cole Rothermel, but Fond du Lac responded on the power play in the second period on a goal from Connor Klapperich, assisted by Blake Spies.

Both teams battled through a scoreless third, then went to an eight-minute 4-on-4 overtime period with no score before another five-minute 3-on-3 frame with, again, no score. The game ultimately went to a 3-man shootout with both teams' first two shooters failing to find the back of the net.

On their final attempt, Cardinals defenseman Aiden Heffner finally snuck one through Rockets goalie Owen Debbert, who had 31 saves for Neenah, and that left the remaining work to Fondy goalie Spencer Shober, who shut the door on Simonson and had 30 saves in the win.

Waupun 4, Appleton United 2

FOND DU LAC - Appleton (1-16, 0-8 Badgerland) opened the scoring with a power play goal from Landon Larson, assisted by Kenny Kapheim and Jack Kangas, but the Warriors (10-9-3, 3-3-1) rattled off four straight goals in response to secure the victory over United.

Nate Batzler and Lukas Kubasa claimed the first two goals for Waupun on the power play with assists from Cade Hartgerink on the Batzler goal and both Jacob Koerner and Jonas Buchholz on Kubasa's.

Haiden Rieder added a goal in the second period courtesy of passes from Mason Holz and Batzler to make it 3-1 in favor of the Warriors. Finally, Jonas Buchholz tacked one on in the third with assists from Kubasa and Keegan Zimmerman.

Henry Heathman brought Appleton a bit closer at the end with a goal, assisted by Brayden Coda, but the game was already well in hand for Waupun.

Blake Colker had 17 saves for the Warriors and Brandon Tobak had 35 saves for United.

WRESTLING

East Central Conference Tournament

Waupun took fourth place out of the seven teams in the East Central conference with a total score of 138 points.

113: Wyatt Stowell (5-2) placed 2nd and scored 18.0 team points. 120: Winton Glewen (4-5) placed 3rd and scored 13.0 team points. 126: Grant Braskamp (5-3) placed 2nd and scored 16.0 team points. 132: Miles Sherden (3-6) placed 6th and scored 3.0 team points. 138: Oscar Stowell (2-6) placed 5th and scored 5.0 team points. 144: Lucas Bresser (1-6) placed 5th and scored 5.0 team points. 150: Patrick Reilley (1-7) placed 6th and scored 3.0 team points. 157: Landen Larsen (5-4) placed 4th and scored 14.0 team points. 175: Kyler Sanders (3-2) placed 4th and scored 14.0 team points. 190: Landen DeGroff (2-4) placed 5th and scored 5.0 team points. 215: Garret Glewen (3-1) placed 3rd and scored 16.0 team points. 285: Owen Kooima (8-1) placed 1st and scored 26.0 team points.
