Flying Queens reach 20-win mark with road victory

BETHANY, Okla. — Kaylee Edgemon poured in 24 points and No. 9 Wayland Baptist reached the 20-win mark, beating Southwestern Christian 80-71 Saturday afternoon in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball.

Kaitlyn Edgemon and Jenna Cooper added 19 and 17 points, respectively, for Wayland (20-3, 12-2), which maintained a one-half game lead atop the SAC standings on Mid-America Christian (18-2, 11-2) and Texas Wesleyan (17-2, 11-2).

The Flying Queens won the rebounding column 34-27 as Kaitlyn Edgemon grabbed nine rebounds, Cooper eight and Kaylee Edgemon seven.

Thamires Andrade scored 25 points for Southwestern Christian (11-8, 6-7), followed by Tresha Yager with 15 and Abbey Phibbs with 11.

The Flying Queens seized control early, leading 21-10 after the first quarter and 40-23 at halftime.

Wayland Baptist 68

BETHANY, Okla. — Derek Dantzler scored in the lane with four seconds left, capping a comeback that sent Southwestern Christian past Wayland Baptist.

SCU (10-6, 8-5) trailed 64-52 with 3:27 left after a 3-point goal by Pioneers guard R.J. Mason. Wayland (10-11, 6-8) scored only two baskets the rest of the way, the last by Javorian Miller with 49 seconds to play that put the Pioneers up 68-62.

Thad Udoh led Wayland with 17 points, and Jaxon Recer had 12.

Luis Machado and Dantzler led SCU with 13 apiece. Khristien White and Braleen Patterson each had 10.

Dantzler and White scored four points apiece during the game-ending 17-4 run. White hit a 3-point goal with 39 seconds left, cutting Wayland's lead to 68-65, and a basket by Ronald Moore made it 68-67 with 19 seconds to go.
