Flat Rock's Murphy dominates again in New Boston Huron's gym

NEW BOSTON – Tim Murphy scored a career-high 22 points to lead Flat Rock’s boys basketball team to an upset of Riverview in the District semifinals last year at New Boston Huron.

That gym brought out the best of Murphy again Friday night.

The senior poured in a season-high 20 points to lead the Rams to a 66-49 win over Huron.

“Our guys did a great job finding Tim open on the baseline, and Tim did an excellent job finishing at the basket,” Flat Rock coach Rick Smith said. “I’m really happy for Tim.”

Flat Rock (9-3 overall) dominated the battle of the last two undefeated teams in the Huron League as Alex Gillum rang up 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Graham Junge was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to go along with 11 points and 7 assists.

“Our offense was very efficient in the first half,” said Smith, whose team led 44-22 at the intermission.

Kyle Kantola scored 17 points, and Chad Martin added 11 for Huron (5-4 overall, 3-1 in the league).

“We competed well in the first quarter and struggled to score in the second quarter,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said. “I was proud of how we continued to compete in the second half.”

Flat Rock’s junior varsity got 24 points from Evan Szalay in a 40-29 junior varsity win.

Huron teams dominant

BELLEVILLE – New Boston Huron’s boys and girls were dominant Friday in a Huron League jamboree at Lodge Lanes.

The boys beat Flat Rock 30-0, and the girls were nearly perfect with a 29-1 victory.

The boys got a 249 game from Hunter Wyszynski and a 212 from Nick Suemnick. Olivia Demick shot 204 and 190 for the girls while Angel Sly and Veronica Richardson each won both of their match points.

Top shooters for Flat Rock were Kaden Luff and Bella Thomas.

The Huron girls are undefeated in the league while the boys moved into a three-way tie for first place with the help of Milan’s 26-4 triumph over Airport. Max Jenness (219-195) and Tyler Marovino (199-190) led Milan. Wess Barton won two match points for Airport, which shares first place with Huron and Milan.

Abby Hill led Airport’s girls to a 19-11 win over Milan. Maggie Smith and Elyse McClaran earned two match points apiece for Milan.

St. Mary Catholic Central, Dundee, Jefferson and Riverview did not bowl because of weather conditions. They will make up their matches later.
