Flat Rock's Junge sets school records with 47 points, 14 3-pointers

NEWPORT – Flat Rock and Jefferson and both love the 3-pointer.

They came into Tuesday’s Huron League boys basketball game ranked 1-2 in the Monroe County Region in triples. Flat Rock was tops with 105, one more than the Bears.

Flat Rock’s Graham Junge gave Jefferson a lesson on living behind the arc.

The junior poured in 14 3-pointers and scored 47 points – both school records – in a 97-59 Ram victory.

““That was an ungodly offensive performance by Graham,” Flat Rock coach Rick Smith said. “Team 93 did a great job setting screens to help Graham be successful.”

Junge broke the school record for points in a game set by Jim Hehl against Ecorse in 1987. The previous mark was triples in a game was 10 by Scott Lawson in 2005.

“Junge put on a show tonight,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said. “You can certainly catch yourself being a fan.”

Michigan High School Athlete Association records lists it as the second-most ever in a game. The record of 15 was set by Matt Kitchen of Mayville in 2001. Menalito McGee of Wyoming also had a game with 14 triples in 2020.

Junge hit 16-of-27 shots in the game, including 14-of-23 from 3-point range. He also found time to collects 7 assists and 5 steals.

Overall, Flat Rock poured in 23 3s, nearly doubling the previous school record of 12 set in 2023. MHSAA records lists that as fourth best in state history.

Joining Junge in double figures were Cyrus Goins (14 points), Keagan Shook (11) and Rocco Breslin (10). Flat Rock moved to 13-3 overall and 8-0 in the Huron League.

Gabe Gelso led Jefferson (7-7) with 20 points and Trey Oldenburg added 18. Oldenburg hit a trio of 3-pointers to set a school record with 41 for the season.

Flat Rock won the junior varsity game 54-18 as Evan Szalay tallied 21 points and 11 rebounds. The freshman game also went to the Rams 50-23 behind 15 points by David Riddle.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Summerfield wins ugly

ALLEN PARK – Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler says his team won’t get any style points for its 85-58 victory over Allen Park Cabrini Tuesday night.

“We were able to come away with a pretty lopsided, but ugly win tonight,” Schiffler said. “I wasn’t very pleased with our defensive effort.”

Tyler Dafoe sparked the Bulldogs (13-3 and ranked No. 10 in Division 4) with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals, Teddy Gault scored 22 points, Brenden Myshock 12 and Jha Jha Hornbeak 11.

SMCC pulls away

GROSSE ILE – St. Mary Catholic Central was nursing a 40-38 lead after three quarters before pouring in 26 points in the final stanza to pull away from Grosse Ile 66-50 Tuesday night.

Buddy Snodgrass and Ian Foster scored 10 points each in the final quarter. Snodgrass finished with a season-high 24 points and Foster finished with 15.

Brady Hines scored a career-high 15 for the 6-7 Falcons.

Lincoln stops Monroe

WILLIS – Monroe remained winless in the Southeastern Conference Red with a 52-41 loss to Ypsilanti Lincoln Tuesday night.

Boys Basketball: Monroe, Bedford looking for league victory

“We played pretty good game against a good Lincoln team,” Monroe coach Larry Middleton said. “Turnovers and free throws got us in the end.”

Lukas Johnson got off to a hot start for the 3-9 Trojans with 11 points in the first half, but Lincoln limited him to just 3 after the intermission.

Turnovers hurt Mason

SAND CREEK – Erie Mason turned the ball over 28 times and shot just 23 percent in a 60-50 loss to Sand Creek Tuesday night.

“It’s the most turnovers we’ve had since my first year in 2011,” Mason coach Kevin Skaggs said.  “Complete and utter lack of focus for a large portion of the game.”

Freshman David Sweeney was a bright spot for the 4-11 Eagles, scoring all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter. Xavier Wise led with 16 points and Logan Goodin also netted 11.

Sweeney scored 12 points and Maddix Wise 13 in a 48-20 junior varsity victory.

Whiteford tops Patriots

BRITTON – Whiteford got a spark off the bench from Noah Stevens, who scored 14 points, and from starting point guard Lincoln Joerin, who scored a season-high 24 points in a 75-69 win over Britton Deerfield Tuesday night.

The Bobcats built a 70-57 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots went on an 11-0 run to make it 70-68. The Bobcats closed out the game with four free throws over the final 1:11 to seal the win and move to 10-6 on the season.

Hunter DeBarr came off the bench to score 11 points while Ryin Ruddy and Evan Parker each scored 9 points for the Bobcats.

Huron starts fast

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron leapt out to an 18-4 lead in the opening quarter and cruised past Milan 61-27 Tuesday night.

“This was a nice team win for us,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said. “The whole team was able to contribute, which was fun to watch.”

Kyle Kantola led Huron (9-5) with 17 points and Chad Martin chipped in 12.

“Credit Huron for pressuring us into turnovers,” Milan coach Bobby Green said. “We didn't take care of the ball tonight. We still struggle to score offensively.”

Zach Farmer hit a trio of 3-points to lead Milan (2-12) with 9 points.

Triples plague Airport

RIVERVIEW – Riverview knocked down 10 3-pointers, including six in the first half, on the way to a 75-70 win over Airport Tuesday night.

“Riverview came out shooting against us – 71.4 percent from 3 and 55.2 percent from 2” Airport coach Jason Ruhlig said. “

Cooper Nye had a nice night for the 9-7 Jets with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Colin Nowak added 13 points and Dillon Byrd 11.

Austin Tackett (11), Drake Ferris (10) and Chase Harvell (10) all scored in double figures as Airport won the junior varsity game 47-45.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SMCC defense dominates

MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central gave up 9 points in the first quarter and just 7 for the rest o the game in a 50-16 triumph over Dundee Tuesday night.

Brooke Mossburg led a balance attack with 10 points and Brooklyn Carter and Natalie LaPrad added 9 each for the 11-3 Kestrels.

Dundee dipped to 5-6.

Mason tops Summerfield

PETERSBURG – Erie Mason controlled the fourth quarter 17-10 to come from behind for a 50-45 win over Summerfield Tuesday night.

“This was a big win for us today,” Summerfield coach Josh Sweigert said. “We competed well and finished the game today on the road. Very proud of this team and their competitiveness today.”

Five different players scored for Mason in the fourth quarter led by Audrey Trainor and Brooklyn Langenderfer with 4 points each. Zoie Stubleski, Bailey Meiring and Makenna Gallaher added 3 apiece.

Stubleski logged a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, Meiring was the top scorer with 13 and Langenderfer finished with a season-high 12 for the 4-8 Eagles.

“Erie Mason outworked us on the glass and on the floor,” Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said.

Jaeli Jones (12), Mia Miller (11) and Mayley Mannebach (11) all scored in double figures for 8-6 Summerfield, which won the junior varsity game 46-10 as Makenzie Wolfe scored 16 points.

Whiteford rebounds

ADRIAN – Whiteford recovered after scoring just a single point in the first quarter to beat Lenawee Christian 39-34 Tuesday night.

It was the Bobcats’ first win over Lenawee Christian since 2014.

“It was a gritty win,” Bobcat coach Nick Brillhart said. “Our defense kept us in it and we leaded heavily on Annie Gapp in the post until the rest of the offense settled in.”

Gapp had a great game with 14 points and 8 rebounds. She made all seven of her field goal attempts.

Emily Rasor chipped in with 13 points, including two big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats grabbed the lead for the first time.

“I loved the way we fought and dug in on the defensive side of the ball to get back into the game,” Brillhart said.

The Bobcats have won three straight games and are 7-4.

Monroe falters in fourth

MONROE – Monroe was tied heading in the fourth quarter, but got outscored 19-10 in the final period of a 47-38 loss to Ypsilanti Lincoln Tuesday night.

“We weren’t energetic tonight,” Monroe coach Trent Moody said. “Giving up 19 points in the fourth quarter is a recipe for disaster, but we will bounce back and keep on looking to improve.”

Sophia Bussell led 4-8 Monroe with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.

Carlson streak snapped

TRENTON – Abby Carafelli led all scorers with 17 points, but Gibraltar Carlson saw its four-game winning streak snapped with a 57-43 loss to Trenton Tuesday night.

The Marauders fell to 8-6.

“Riley Ivy stepped up defensively and played a big role on the team,” Carlson coach John Mason said.

PREP SWIMMING

Big night for Roa-Garcia

MONROE – Alex Roa-Garcia had a 12-second time drop to win the individual medley and also was first in the 100-yard freestyle to lead Monroe to wins over Wayne Memorial 138-24 and Ypsilanti 129-36 Tuesday night.

Monroe went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle with Luke Lindsay, Robert Johnson and Parker Bomia-Laberdee. The Trojans also finished 1-2 in the breaststroke with Josh Riggs and Deven Offerman and diving with Vishwas Joshi and Leandro Alcantara. Both divers logged personal-best scores.

Other winners were Maxx Adams, Reggie Geftos, Jayce Hay and Alec Adams.

Dundee wins twice

CHELSEA – Dundee racked up 23 personal-best times in beating Chelsea 95-91 and Williamston 123-61 Tuesday.

Drew Bylow (200-yard freestyle, butterfly) and TK Westbrook (individual medley, 500 freestyle) and also swam on two winning relays each. The Vikings swept the relays and also got a win from Mike Gerweck in the 50 freestyle.

Milan doubles up

TECUMSEH – Gunnar Kruise (100, 200 freestyle), Tadas Zukovskis (individual medley, 500) and Sam Kennedy (50, butterfly) all were double winners as Milan drubbed Tecumseh 112-57 Tuesday.

The Big Reds won every event. Other individual winners were Matthew Johnson (backstroke) and Ben Heikka (breaststroke).

Jacobs leads Mason-Ida

ERIE – Bowie Jacobs won the individual medley and backstroke to lead Erie Mason-Ida to wins over Allen Park and New Boston Huron-Taylor on Senior Night Tuesday.

Brendan Perry won the butterfly, Cameron Tross the 100-yard freestyle, and Grantham Nelson the breaststroke.
