Five Region teams win or share track and field league crown

Lots of Monroe County Region teams were celebrating league championships Tuesday.

The Jefferson and Erie Mason girls won league meets to clinch overall league titles.

Whiteford’s boys also was a league meet to share an overall crown with Mason.

Milan’s boys wrapped up a share of the overall Huron League championship.

Mason, Whiteford win

ERIE – Whiteford’s boys nipped Erie Mason by a single point 179-178 in Tuesday’s league meet, leaving the teams in a tie for first in the overall standings.

“Both teams came out to compete at a high level which is difficult after a three-day turnaround from regionals,” Whiteford coach Jay Hockey said.

Keegan Masters carried a heavy load for the Bobcats, winning the 800 (2:01.55), 1,600 (4:49.27) and 3,200 (10:32.34) meters.

Ryin Ruddy swept the high (:15.83) and low (:43.29) hurdles.

Other individual wins came from Stepan Masserant (13-0 pole vault), Liam Waterford (19-5.25 long jump) and Jess Saylor (:50.43 400) and Whiteford won the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays.

Seconds came from Brock Norman and Ryan Thomas.

Erie Mason had two double-winners: Landon Nastale took the 100 (:11.22) and 200 (:23.38) and Aaron Koehn was crowned champion in the shot-put (45-4) and discus (125-3).

The Eagles also took the 3,200 relay.

Erie Mason’s girls racked up 136 points and finished 37 ahead of Whiteford. Summerfield was sixth with 58.5.

Leading Mason’s girls were double winners Giuliana Nastale (:12.82 in 100, :26.82 in 200) and Beth Sweeney (5-0 in high jump, :45.54 in low hurdles),

Elizabeth Lambert captured the 3,200 (14:00.68) and Bailey Meiring took the pole vault (8-9) and Mason finished first in the 400 relay.

Whiteford’s Kenzie Gray swept the shot-put (32-7) and discus (99-11). Other Bobcat winners were Rylie DeSilvis (15-5.5 long jump), Alaina McClain (2:30.94 800) and the 3,200 relay.

Jefferson girls run away

GROSSE ILE – Jefferson’s girls scored 134 points to finish 32 points ahead of runner-up St. Mary Catholic Central.

Airport was third with 77, Milan fourth with 73, Flat Rock sixth with 69 and New Boston Huron eighth with 41.

Balance was the key for the Bears. They won just two events – Alyssa Masserant captured the 400 in 1:01.14 and Layla Tahmouch ruled the shot-put in 38-1.

"We won our fourth straight Huron League championship," Jefferson coach Phil Speare said. "This is a first for our girls program.  Along with going 7-0 again it’s been quite a ride with this group of seniors.  They are the first class to go 28-0 during their four years at Jefferson.  It has been exciting and a joy to watch these girls come together this season.

"Alyssa Masserant, Katie Powell, Kim Miller, Jenna Pilachowski, Riley Peer, and Layla Tahmouch were our clear-cut warriors today."

Courtney Bovair of Airport was a triple winner in the 800 (2:22.81), 1,600 (5:13.87) and 3,200 (11:34.06) meters and SMCC’s Adela Iles won the 100 (:12.78) and 200 (:26.12).

SMCC logged a pair of relay wins (400, 3,200) and Milan took first in the other two (800, 1,600).

Other champions were MaryAlice Lynch of SMCC (:16.56 high hurdles) and Keola Botts of Flat Rock (116-4 discus).

On the boys side, Riverview scored 133.5 points to 110 for runner-up Milan. Those teams shared the overall championship.

Huron took third with 91, Jefferson fourth with 79, Airport fifth with 67, Flat Rock seventh with 49.5 and SMCC eighth with 39.

Double winners in the boys meet were Virgile Gruwez-Guinet of Milan (:11.17 in 100, :22.5 in 200), Michael Armetta of Jefferson (:14.81 in high hurdles, :41.01 in lows), Michael Foor of Airport (50-10.6 in shot-put, 167-2 in discus) and Ben Merkel of Jefferson (5-10 in high jump, 21-4.5 in long jump.

Adam Johnson of Milan (:51.93 400) and Jacob Stanislawski of Flat Rock (10:19.1 3,200) also won.

Milan won the 400 and 800 relays and the 1,600 relay went to Huron.

Ida hurdlers shine

IDA – Ida’s girls took five of the top six spots in the two hurdle races at the Lenawee County Athletic Association meet.

Mackenzie Dollison, Julia Hughes and Grace May went 1-2-3 in the high hurdles, then Hughes and Dollision were first and third, respectively, in the lows.

Ida’s girls took second with 114.5 points, finishing only behind Adrian Madison with 124. Dundee placed sixth with 68.

Ida also got a second from Madison Steinman in the shot-put. Dundee runner-ups were Maddie Salenbien (200) and Lily Ratliff (long jump).

Dundee’s boys were third with 85 and Ida wound up fourth with 80. Onsted ran away with the title, scoring 158.5.

Isaak Rubley of Dundee won the 800 in 2:03.55 and was third in the 1,600. Daniel Kreger (100), Calvin Campbell (discus) and Jackson Martin (long jump) were second and Braiden Whitaker (200) was third.

Ida had a trio of wins – Grantham Nelson (:53.72 in 400), Brandon Commet (:15.18 in high hurdles) and Jaxon Bolster (12-6 in pole vault).

Carlson gets two seconds

WYANDOTTE – Seconds by Reagan Reaume (3,200) and Drew Sikora (high jump) were the best finishes for Gibraltar Carlson in the Downriver League Meet Tuesday.

Carlson was fourth in both the boys and girls meets.

Taking thirds for the Marauders were Naveh Davis, Jon Anderson and Avery Ortiz.

Huron survives scare

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron survived a tough 3-2 battle with St. Mary Catholic Central Tuesday to remain tied for first place with one loss in the Huron League.

Brady Decator was strong on the mound for SMCC and Brennan Runyon logged two hits and an RBI.

Ida wins two more

ADRIAN – Cam Riggs and AJ Schrader played a leading role as Ida swept Adrian Madison 13-12 and 8-3 Tuesday.

Riggs had three hits in the first game and drove in two in the second. Schrader drove in two runs and had two of his team’s three hits in the second.

Other offensive standouts for the Blue Streaks, who improved to 19-8 overall and finished at 7-5 in the Lenawee County Athletic Association, were Jacob Towne, Noah Adkins and Evan O’Dell.

Dundee sweeps Hudson

HUDSON – Dundee won a slugfest and a pitchers’ duel Tuesday, beating Hudson 9-6 and 3-2.

Cam Fairchild, Evan Bennett, Carter Ray, and Ryan Zanger had two hits each in the opener and Zanger pitched well. Joey Brink notched two hits in the first game while Bennett and Ray drove in runs.

Cooper Buhl was strong on the mound for the 17-11 Vikings.

Mills, Nye shine for Jets

CARLETON – Jack Mills went 4-for-4 with three runs and one of Cooper Nye’s two hits was a game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth for Airport in a 10-8 victory over Tecumseh Tuesday.

Nolan Zajac went 2-for-2 and Bryce Kull was the winning pitcher in relief for the 22-6 Jets.

PREP SOFTBALL

Irwin, Brown lead attack

HUDSON – Kennedy Irwin racked up six hits and four RBI while Kiernan Brown finished with four hits and six RBI for Dundee in a 9-1, 15-5 sweep of Hudson Tuesday.

Kaylee Imo added a trio of hits and four RBI while Avery Ball recorded four hits, three RBI and four stolen bases. Lauren Doane and Kaylee Imo pitched well for the 22-9 Vikings.

Ida offense hums

IDA – Summer Smith and Jessica Scrader logged three hits each and Smith drove in six runs as Ida routed Adrian Madison 13-3 Tuesday.

Alexa Swiderski and Alli Scrader added two hits each.

“The girls played well today,” Ida coach Chelsea Branchea said. “McKenna Tarry pitched very well tonight and Resse Hennessey was a wall behind the plate.”

PREP GOLF

Flat Rock falls short

MONROE – Flat Rock fell just four strokes shot of champion Grosse Ile with a round of 323 at Sandy Creek Golf Course Tuesday.

Laran Rogier (78) and Joel Scully (79) made first-team all-league for the Rams while Evan Little and Mitchell Smith each carded an 83 to make the second team.

New Boston Huron was third with 331, St. Mary Catholic Central fifth with 340, Airport sixth with 342, Milan seventh with 353 and Jefferson eighth with 389.

Milan’s Max Jenness was the individual medalist with 76.

Huron was led by Nick Kosiba with 78, Anthony Robbins with 80 and Cameron Grant with 81.

Thomas Rivard of SMCC and Brayden Siders of Airport both checked in with 81.
