Five area baseball teams, five softball teams reach CIF-SS quarterfinals

Five area baseball teams and five area softball teams earned victories Tuesday to reach the quarterfinal round of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Noah Stead hit a three-run home run to pace a six-run fifth inning as Westlake came from behind to beat host West Torrance, 6-3, in a Division 2 second-round baseball game.

Andrew Habermann allowed four baserunners and two unearned runs in five innings, striking out six. Nate Johnson reached base four times, going 2 for 2 with two walks, and Kaden Youmans was 2 for 4 for the Warriors (26-4), who visit Arcadia in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Greg Lareva hit a two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh and Tanner Stotts came out of the bullpen to nail down the save as Moorpark came from behind edge host Valencia, 4-3, in the Division 2 second round.

Jacob Shannon-Wilkerson was 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Cameron Johnson picked up the win with 1.1 innings of shutout relief. Derek Nickels started for the Musketeers, allowing just two earned runs and two hits in 4.2 innings. Moorpark (17-10-1) will host Crean Lutheran in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Justin Frohn threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits, and his teammates supported him with a six-run fifth inning as Newbury Park knocked off second-seeded Fontana-Summit, 8-0, in the Division 3 second round.

Cole Munyon was 3 for 3 with two runs, Luke Medhurst was 3 for 4 and Cade Falsken was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs to lead the Panthers’ 11-hit attack. Newbury Park (17-12) will host Irvine-Beckham in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Tommy Goodin was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Boston Bateman walked three times and hit a two-run home run as top-seeded Camarillo outlasted host Murrietta Valley 6-4 in the Division 4 second round.

Trotter Enright and Blaise Meylemans also had two hits apiece and Nick Tostado allowed three earned runs over six innings to earn the win as the Scorpions (21-5) advanced to host Cerritos in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Rio Mesa scored two runs in the top of the seventh to extend the game, but host Ontario Christian responded with a walk-off sacrifice fly to eliminate the Spartans, 7-6, in the Division 4 second round.

Damien Valdez was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Alec Fontyn, Gavin Samora and Daniel Banuelos each went 2 for 4 as Rio Mesa (17-11-1) piled up 12 hits.

Devon Wilkes allowed three hits over seven innings on the mound as Pacifica edged host Whittier Christian 3-1 in the Division 5 second round.

Dario Navarro was 2 for 4 with a run scored, Sal Lopez was 2 for 4 and Jordyn Gonzalez and JJ Carmona had RBI singles for the Tritons (17-11-1), who will host Riverside Prep in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Ricky Estrada pitched more than seven strong innings, striking out five, but St. Bonaventure fell 4-2 to visiting Rancho Mirage in eight innings in the Division 6 second round. Max Peters and Luc Beauchemin had two hits apiece for the Seraphs (14-14-1).

Despite three hits from Luis Cervantes, Hueneme fell 13-4 to visiting Buena Park in the Division 7 second round.

Softball

Terrianna Kelley hit a three-run home run, Kami Guthrie was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Riley McCoy went 2 for 2 with two walks, and Sienna Reynolds struck out nine over seven innings as Oaks Christian beat host Los Alamitos, 5-1, in the first round of the Division 1 softball playoffs.

The Lions (22-4) will host second-seed Garden Grove-Pacifica in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Camarillo was eliminated 11-0 at Anaheim-Canyon, the No. 5-ranked team in the state by CalHiSports.com, in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs. The Coastal Canyon League champion finished its season at 20-7.

Jasmine Reyes was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and struck out 11 in the circle to push Rio Mesa to a 7-2 win at Temple City in the Division 2 second round. The Spartans (24-5) will host Gahr in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Mia Gomez was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Amaya Del Omo, Rylee Redmond and Jayden Pollon also had two hits as Agoura scored five runs in the top of the seventh to come from behind for a 9-5 win at Upland in the Division 3 second round. The Chargers will host Charter Oak in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Mrdah Murali hit a two-run home run and Julianna Galbraith struck out nine, but Royal couldn’t recover from a five-run Charter Oak first inning in a 5-3 loss in the Division 3 second round

Rachel Godoy was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Azaria Aguilar allowed four hits and struck out eight in the circle as St. Bonaventure routed visiting Fillmore, 13-1, in a Division 5 second-round game at Ventura College.

Laura Lynch scored four runs and Hudson Ortiz had four RBIs for St. Bonaventure (20-2-1), which will host Linfield Christian in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Emma Estrella had two hits for Fillmore (15-7-2).

Freshman Ava DePew drove in all four runs, including a pivotal three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, to power Grace Brethren to a 4-3 win at Garden Grove in the Division 5 second round. Rosemary Salazar struck out seven and allowed two earned runs to pick up the win for the Lancers (18-3-1), which will host Liberty in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
