FIRST LOOK: Netflix’s latest sports documentary to feature Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel

After more than a decade since Texas A&M caught lightning in a bottle, Aggie fans will be able to take a stroll down memory lane with Netflix’s latest sports documentary.

The streamer’s popular documentary anthology series UNTOLD is back with Volume 3, and this season’s stories will pull back the curtain on some of the most notorious stories to hit the landscape of sports. One of their four episodes will feature a name that is etched in Aggies history: Johnny Manziel.

The episode titled, “Johnny Football” premieres on August 8 and will cover Manziel’s rise as a promising young quarterback and his struggle in handling his newfound stardom once he made the leap to the NFL.

Netflix first teased the highly-anticipated episode back in September 2022:

The streamer recently provided a synopsis for the episode on their TUDUM website:

“In 2012, the brightest star in all of sports was an undersized freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel from unheralded Texas A&M, whose fervor on the field was rivaled only by his hard-partying ways off it. Dubbed “Johnny Football,” the magnetic football player captured the nation’s attention and initially relished his alter ego: “I wanted to be Johnny Football. Johnny Football never had a bad time,” he says. But as the money rolled in, the scrutiny heightened, and Manziel rejected his newfound fame and suddenly lost his way.

With astonishing candor, Manziel — along with his family, coaches, former best friend and agent — details what happened behind the scenes as scandals piled up in the glare of paparazzi flashbulbs. He fumbled his shot at NFL success after the Cleveland Browns picked him in the first round of the NFL draft in 2014, but Manziel went on to search for something even greater. “

Manziel would electrify college football audiences in his two seasons with the Aggies, throwing for 7,820 yards, 63 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions. His freshman season was unlike any other, as he became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, Manning Award, and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

He would go on to be drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, but his college stardom failed to carry over to the next level. Manziel would last just two seasons in the NFL, throwing for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns with seven interceptions with a 74.4 career passer rating with the Browns.

UNTOLD Vol. 3 will release weekly beginning August 1, with Manziel’s episode dropping second. Audiences can watch only with a Netflix subscription.
