The FHSAA wrestling championships start Thursday. Here are the Volusia-Flagler qualifiers

Can Matanzas’ girls team and Kendall Bibla win their second consecutive state championships? Will any of the three boys who claimed regional titles last week finish the job with state gold?

Those questions and others will be answered this week. The Florida High School Association’s wrestling championships kick off Thursday and stretch through the finals Saturday at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

Twenty-eight wrestlers from the Volusia-Flagler area earned trips to the event by placing inside the top four in their weight classes at regionals.

In the boys division, 13 local wrestlers booked spots. Flagler Palm Coast and New Smyrna Beach tied for the most qualifiers with five apiece.

The Bulldogs feature two Region 1-3A champions: Toryion Stallings at 132 pounds and Ethan Laupepa at 215. New Smyrna Beach didn’t have any first-place wrestlers, but Jonathan Bruner and Sawyer Vanrider each grabbed second.

In Region 1-2A, Jordan Mills secured the top spot in the 190-pound weight class. He’ll look to close his senior season with an undefeated record — currently 48-0.

All 15 of the girls qualifiers hail from Region 1-1A, which Matanzas won as a team.

Naturally, the Pirates possess the most state wrestlers of any local squad with six. Mariah Mills and Tiana Fries captured regional titles at 110 and 140 pounds, respectively. Bibla ranked second in her 145-pound weight group.

Flagler Palm Coast jumped to second as a team. The Bulldogs tallied three first-place finishes: Christina Borgmann (125 pounds), Ana Vilar (130) and Alexa Calidonio (170).
