Ferris State football stays undefeated by beating Wayne State; Division II playoffs next

Jared Bernhardt had 26 carries for 176 yards and three touchdowns as Ferris State finished the regular season undefeated with a 35-13 win over Wayne State on Saturday in Big Rapids.

Bernhardt, a former Maryland lacrosse star who transferred to Ferris State to play football this season, also had 75 yards passing and a touchdowns.

Ferris racked up 554 total yards, 434 on the ground, and held Wayne State to just 195 total yards. Tyler Minor had 106 yards rushing on 16 carries and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs (10-0, 7-0 GLIAC), ranked No. 1 in Division II, will learn Sunday who they'll playing in the national tournament, most likely at home next Saturday.

The Warriors (2-9, 2-5) opened the scoring on a Kendall Williams 3-yard touchdown run. But Ferris State reeled off five straight touchdowns, the final one coming in the fourth quarter on a 52-yard pass from Bernhardt to C.J. Jefferson.

Williams added an 8-yard scoring run to finish with 29 yards (on 21 carries) and two touchdowns.

Grand Valley State 42, Davenport 0: Cade Peterson was 13-for-17 for 134 yards and three touchdowns for the host Lakers (9-1, 6-1), who outgained the Panthers, 449-102. Bryce Young-Walls had six carries for 119 yards and a touchdown (57 yards). Davenport ends the season 3-8 (2-5).

Michigan Tech 21, Saginaw Valley State 20: Will Ark was 15-for-28 for 141 yards and two touchdowns, including a 23-yard go-ahead score to Hunter Richards late in the third quarter for the host Huskies (6-4). Tommy Scott had 18 rushes for 94 yards and a touchdowns for SVSU (7-4).

Northern Michigan 34, Northwood 26: Charlie Gerhard had six catches for 119 yards and a touchdown for the host Wildcats (4-7, 2-6), who overcame an early 14-0 deficit. Noah Koenigknecht had seven catches for 165 yards and a touchdown for Northwood (1-9, 1-7).

MIAA

Adrian 33, Kalamazoo 21: Jack Wurzer was 20-for-25 for 275 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions for visiting Adrian (5-5). Malik Ray added 97 yards rushing and Steven Moses had 72 yards on the ground. Josh Nichols was 17-for-41 for 217 yards and two touchdowns for Kalamazoo (1-9).

Albion 34, Alma 7: Jack Bush was 22-for-29 for 242 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for host Albion (9-1, 5-1 MIAA). Kolby Canfield had five catches for 48 yards and two TDs. Trent Devereaux had 101 yards passing and a touchdown.

Hope 17, Trine (Ind.) 13: Elijah Smith had 33 carries for 204 yards and a touchdown for visiting Hope (8-1, 6-0). Chance Strickland's 6-yard TD run was the go-ahead score. Adam Gutting and Connor Arthur each had a touchdown catch for Trine (6-4, 4-2).

Olivet 79, Finlandia 6: Cortaveon Barnett had 11 carries for 326 yards and four touchdowns (52, 12, 60, 85 yards) for host Olivet (7-3), who outgained Finlandia, 689-105. Jeremiah Sterling had 12 carries for 148 yards and David Coffey throw for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Finlandia finishes the season 0-9.
