That was fast: Cleveland Browns already hire a new general manager

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is a high-profile big booster for the University of Tennessee and his name was brought up often in the coverage of the Volunteers’ seemingly endless search to find a new head football coach.

Haslam’s search for a new Browns general manager was the exact opposite.

The Browns fired general manager Sashi Brown on Thursday morning and had his replacement on Thursday evening. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported former Kansas City Chiefs GM John Dorsey was hired for the job.

Schefter added that the Browns talked to other candidates and satisfied the Rooney Rule, which dictates teams must interview minority candidates, and you’re bound to hear a lot of criticism of how the Browns turned that rule into a farce with this hiring. It’s hard to imagine the team had a legitimate interview and gave a fair chance to any other candidate, given that reports said the team had already vetted candidates before officially firing Brown and wanted to hire Dorsey.

Among the voices of criticism, per a report from Schefter:

Dorsey is a respected talent evaluator and he has a lot to work with. The Browns are a punch line in NFL circles, but they have many extra picks in 2018, likely will have the first overall pick, have a few good young building blocks already and more than $100 million in projected salary cap space. While Brown stockpiled picks but didn’t do a great job actually drafting players, he left behind many picks for Dorsey to build the roster. Dorsey might do very well with this opportunity.

We can say many things about the Browns and their perennial issues, but they definitely weren’t indecisive on their GM hire.
