Fantasy baseball stock watch - Week 3

Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon fields a bunt by Miami Marlins' Reed Johnson during the seventh inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in Washington. Johnson was out at first on the play. The Nationals won 5-0. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)

Anthony Rendon, stock up – The former top-10 pick is off to a hot start, hitting .346/.382/.635 with 12 RBI over 13 games. Rendon has quickly gone from batting at the bottom of Washington’s order to the top, which is another boost to his fantasy value.

Milwaukee Brewers' Carlos Gomez reacts in the dugout after his home run off Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Edinson Volquez during the first inning of a baseball game Saturday, April 12, 2014, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Jeffrey Phelps)

Carlos Gomez, stock up – He’s batting .345 with four homers and nine RBI to start the season, justifying his high ADP. Gomez has been a bit lucky (30.8 HR/FB%, .405 BABIP), but he also sports a 35.0 LD% and is sure to start stealing more bases soon. He’s an elite fantasy player.

New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, left, reacts with second baseman Brian Roberts after Roberts made a play to get out Baltimore Orioles' Ryan Flaherty to end the sixth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Yankee Stadium in New York. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

Masahiro Tanaka, stock up – Any questions about how Tanaka’s splitter would fare in the majors has quickly been answered, as he’s posted an 18:1 K:BB ratio over 14.0 innings during his first two starts. It’s a small sample, but Tanaka’s 17.2 SwStr% reveals he has the upside to be a top-15 fantasy pitcher in 2014.

Washington Nationals' Ryan Zimmerman (11) reacts after getting tagged out by Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons on second base on a pickoff by Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood in the fifth inning of their baseball game Saturday, April 12, 2014, in Atlanta. Ryan Zimmerman, stock down – He was downgraded last week after missing some time with continued soreness in his shoulder, and Zimmerman will now be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks with a fractured thumb. It’s a shame since he was off to such a nice start at the plate (.364/.405/.636). Fantasy owners shouldn’t drop him.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mat Latos fields a ground ball as Brett Marshall covers up during spring training baseball practice in Goodyear, Ariz., Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

Mat Latos, stock down – He recently suffered a setback, and an MRI revealed a flexor mass strain in Latos’ right elbow. As a result, he won’t throw for the next two weeks, pushing his timetable back quite a bit. Latos owners have the right to be panicking at this point, as his arm continues to be an issue.

Los Angeles Angels' Josh Hamilton (32) slides into home to score as Houston Astros catcher Carlos Corporan (22) reaches for the ball in the first inning of a baseball game Monday, April 7, 2014, in Houston. Hamilton and Albert Pujols scored on a Howie Kendrick single. (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan)

Josh Hamilton, stock down – He was hitting .444/.545/.741 before suffering a torn ligament in his thumb that will sideline him for 6-to-8 weeks. Hamilton had shown much improved patience at the plate this season, so there were encouraging signs of a big bounce back campaign. Hopefully he can return from the injury on the short side of the timetable.

Chicago Cubs' Jose Veras, right, gets the baseball back from teammate Christian Villanueva (61) after the two collided in the infield trying to run down a slow grounder in the ninth inning of a spring training baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Friday, March 28, 2014, in Phoenix. Jose Veras, stock down – He’s off to a brutal start, walking seven batters over 3.2 innings, forcing the Cubs to remove Veras from the closer’s role. He was a candidate to be traded at the deadline, but fantasy owners at least hoped to get saves from him for a few months. Hector Rondon and Pedro Strop figure to step in as Chicago’s closer for now.

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Shelby Miller wipes his face after Cincinnati Reds' Billy Hamilton advanced to third on a fly ball in fifth inning action during a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Shelby Miller, stock down – Normally there would be no reason for concern after just two outings, but since Miller was shutdown at the end of last year with arm troubles, his poor start to 2014 is worrisome. Miller has a 7:6 K:BB ratio over 11.1 innings, his velocity is down, and he’s producing few swings and misses. There’s serious cause for concern.
