False start? NBC analyst rips refs for lack of flags on Kansas Chiefs RT vs. Detroit Lions
Are you confused about the lack of flags in the NFL season opener between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs?
You aren't alone. Everyone in the football world, including NBC rule analyst and former NFL referee Terry McAulay, is perplexed by the referee's lack of penalties called on the Chiefs' right tackle Jawaan Taylor.
Observers have noticed on nearly every play Taylor has been setting up further behind the line of scrimmage than offensive linemen are allowed to while also jumping a half-second early. Because of this, he could be called for a false start penalty, but hasn't been handed one this game.
"To be on the line, his helmet has to be on the waistline of the center. And to be honest, we've watched him all night, and he's not even remotely close," McAulay said.
Terry Mcaulay on how far back Jawaan Taylor is lining up: "To be on the LOS, his helmet has to break the waist line of the center, and tbh we've watched him the whole game, he's really not remotely close. It's putting the DE at a tremendous disadvantage." https://t.co/Sep5xNFq2D pic.twitter.com/qs6XmzuUPC

Taylor has been tasked with primarily handling Aidan Hutchinson in pass protection throughout the game. Hutchinson has been a frequent visitor to the Kansas City backfield but has yet to register a sack on Patrick Mahomes, despite multiple quarterback hurries.
"It puts the defensive end at a tremendous disadvantage when he can be that far back." McAulay said.
