Russian tennis player Andrey Chesnokov, a Former Roland Garros 1989 semifinalist, fired back at the president of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, after Pozdnyakov criticized Russian tennis players for competing in 2024 Olympics under a neutral flag, Russian propaganda outlet RIA Novosti wrote on April 9.

Chesnokov ridiculed Pozdnyakov's stance, pointing out that his daughter, Sofia, won two gold medals in fencing at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo under a neutral flag as well.

"It's funny to hear such things,” he said.

“Well, if that's the case, then his daughter Sofia should give up her Olympic gold medals in Tokyo. Or Pozdnyakov himself should urge her to return the awards. They should have persuaded her not to go to the Olympics at all back then. What's the point, if they also competed without an anthem and a flag?"

It was reported earlier that Russia called for a boycott of the Paris Olympics due to "humiliating" conditions for Russian athletes.

Russia’s Olympic teams and athletes have all been barred from participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, unless they agree to appear under a neutral flag instead of the Russian one.
