Every draft pick made by Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

It’s officially draft month. The Green Bay Packers hold 11 picks in the 2022 NFL draft, including four in the first two rounds and five in the top 100 picks. General manager Brian Gutekunst has considerable draft capital after trading away receiver Davante Adams.

How will the Packers use their picks later this month? Looking back could provide clues for the future.

Here’s a complete breakdown of Gutekunst’s four-year draft history (2018-21) with the Packers.

There’s a clear pattern here: Gutekunst likes young, elite athletes at premium positions in the first round. Four of the first-round picks are starters on defense. Love, the fifth, remains an unknown. Alexander and Gary are both stars and Stokes could be headed in that direction.

Once again, Gutekunst targets elite athletes in the second round. Myers didn’t test, but the other three were above 9.0 RAS. Missing on Jackson was immediately countered by the home run hit on Jenkins. Dillon and Myers will be important contributors for 2022.

The Packers traded up to get Burks and Rodgers. It appears Gutekunst is willing to take more risks in this round, both in terms of moving around the board and targeting different levels of athletes and specific players. This hasn’t been a friendly round to Gutekunst so far. Burks and Sternberger are both gone, and Deguara and Rodgers are still role players.

Moving up the board in early rounds has cost Gutekunst two opportunities to make picks in the fourth round. Moore was a bust; Newman was an up-and-down rookie starter. Don’t be surprised if these picks get used as ammo to move around the board again this year.

Valdes-Scantling was a hit, and the jury is still out on the 2021 picks, but there is a lot of wasted opportunity here. Gutekunst must get better at finding legitimate contributors at this part of the draft. After Valdes-Scantling signed in Kansas City, only Slaton and Jean-Charles remain on the roster.

Four of the team’s last five sixth-round picks have been spent on offensive linemen. Runyan looks like a terrific find, but Gutekunst hasn’t gotten much out of the rest. The Packers don’t have a pick in this round in 2022.

The seventh round is the place to take big swings on elite athletes. The hit rate here isn’t high, but finding contributors this late is difficult for every team. The Packers will get several more swings this year.
