Dominic Calvert-Lewin rescues draw but Everton set unwanted club record

Everton had to win the FA Cup to gloss over their deficiencies the last time they were this bad. Almost 30 years on, avoiding relegation would be the equivalent fig leaf for Sean Dyche’s side.

Far from being unlucky, the point gleaned from a 13th game without a win – an unwanted Premier League club record – might prove to be pivotal in their efforts to avoid relegation in a season where it is hard to imagine there will not yet be a few more twists and turns in the battle for survival.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty two minutes from the end rewarded a dogged display which leaves the Merseyside club four points above the drop zone going into Saturday’s high-stakes clash against Dyche’s former employers Burnley.

Eddie Howe had turned the game in Newcastle’s favour with his substitutions in Saturday’s crazy 4-3 victory over West Ham, but his reinforcements on this occasion had a rather more unwanted role in this result as the hosts’ hopes of securing the return of European football next season suffered a late unwanted blow.

As the visitors’ attempts to cancel out Alexander Isak’s early strike became increasingly desperate, Paul Dummett, making a rare appearance off the bench amid a string of defensive absences, inexplicably wrestled Ashley Young to the ground inside the penalty area. Referee Tony Harrington initially felt the robust challenge failed to warrant punishment, but having been invited by VAR to review his decision, a penalty was the inevitable outcome.

It was only the second spot kick awarded to Everton this season, but even after the nerve-testing interlude for video review, Calvert-Lewin kept his composure to beat Martin Dubravka, who guessed the right way, with a powerful finish to the goalkeeper’s right.

Eddie Howe was honest enough not to quibble with the award afterwards and said: “When you look back at it both players are grappling but it’s the height of Paul’s arm against Ashley’s neck that I think swings it against us.

“As a former defender myself, I know it’s always difficult when you come on late in games. You want to help the team, and Paul’s been first class since I’ve been here. I really can’t fault the lads and I thought we had weathered the storm.

“Alex Isak is a scorer of great goals and it was a top class performance from him. He’s building in confidence all the time and he’s a player we want to keep at the club. He’ll probably be more frustrated about the one he missed late on.”

In the week where Howe had issued the first of presumably many ‘hands-off’ warnings to potential suitors interested in Newcastle’s prized asset, Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly among them, Isak underlined his growing reputation with a clinical 15th-minute finish. He ran onto a lofted through ball from recalled winger Harvey Barnes to glide effortlessly past Jarrad Branthwaite before he beat Jordan Pickford from a dozen yards.

On his latest pantomime villain appearance at St James’ Park, Everton’s proud former Sunderland goalkeeper remained unbowed in dealing with everything else the hosts could throw at him and was a major factor in earning a point for his side.

The late chance alluded to by Howe saw Isak’s close-range effort from Barnes’ cut-back hacked off the line by Vitaliy Mykolenko.

The in-form Swede, who became the first Newcastle player to score in five consecutive league games since Yoan Gouffran 11 years ago, was also heavily involved as VAR intervened to deny the hosts a crucial second goal early in the second-half when spotting a marginal offside after Dan Burn swept home the 19-goal top scorer’s low cross when the visitors switched off at a quick free-kick.

Howe, who revealed Miguel Almiron (knee) and Tino Livramento (ankle) are both set to be out for a month after coming off injured against West Ham at the weekend, added: “We’re frustrated. We needed that second goal. It looked like we’d got it on a couple of occasions and at one-nil Everton were never out of it.

“We should have won the game based on the chances we had. Everton ask you a lot of questions and we stood up physically to the challenge but in the end it was down to that clinical edge.

“We’re determined to get into Europe and the last two performances have been very strong. The general attitude and the way we’re trying to play is back. For a spell it was missing but this was a positive performance despite the disappointing end.”

Everton looked an altogether more threatening proposition following a triple substitution by Dyche on the hour with the introduction of Calvert-Lewin, Andre Gomes and James Garner.

The latter of those struck the foot of Dubravka’s left-hand post with a deft shot on the turn in a warning shot that the contest was far from over. That was proven as stoppage-time approached when Dummett wrestled Young to afford Calvert-Lewin the opportunity to stem a personal goal drought stretching back 18 matches to late October.

The forward’s six goals against Newcastle are the most he has scored against any opponent. Despite it failing to prevent Everton’s worst run of results for 67 years, it could yet prove to be one of the most crucial single swings of a boot in the club’s recent history.

Burnley take a 1-0 lead. Jacob Bruun Larsen volleys home Dara O’Shea’s cross in the 37th minute to raise what is left of the roof at Turf Moor.

It was a high-tariff finish, executed superbly by Larsen for a Burnley side who are starting to believe the Premier League might be for them after all.

Ironically it came after Wolves’ best spell with Burnley indebted to a timely intervention from Vitinho off the foot of Rayan Ait-Nouri after a breakout and Joao Gomes wasting a presentable chance in the 25th minute from a well-scripted corner routine.

Problems with the roof at Turf Moor

A section of the home support in the Jimmy McIlroy Stand has been rehoused after some loose metal was spotted hanging down from the roof.

The operation has been carried out with a minimum of fuss by stewards with the danger area in the lower tier now cordoned off but it has left an area of around 400 blue seats vacant.

A safety announcement has just confirmed that Block 7 is closed for the remainder of the game.

A bout of head tennis on halfway leads to a perceptive ball over the top from Harvey Barnes to release Alexander Isak. The Sweden forward still has plenty to do but he makes it looks easy, cutting inside Jarrad Branthwaite to fire the opener past Jordan Pickford from a dozen yards to become the first Newcastle player since Yoan Gouffran 11 years ago to score in five consecutive Premier League games.

Everton have a free-kick in a dangerous position, close to the left-corner of the penalty area. Dwight McNeil’s delivery was excellent, and Onana and Tarkowski were queuing up to meet it, but the centre-back headed over the bar. That was a good chance for Everton, who have posed a threat in the last few minutes. Lovely turn from Barnes after sucking Tarkowski in, wins a foul.

Eddie Howe warned his Newcastle players about the danger posed by Everton from set-pieces, but they appear to have ignored the advice of their head coach, leaving James Tarkowski virtually un-marked at a free-kick to head over from inside the six-yard box. The visitors should be ahead.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is in attendance at the City Ground and will have some excruciating memories from the last meeting with Fulham.

In December, Forest were thrashed 5-0 at Craven Cottage as Steve Cooper’s tenure inched closer to its end.

Before the final whistle, Marinakis stormed out of the director’s box and his lanyard accreditation was found in the bushes of a house on the streets outside the stadium.

Can Everton capitalise on Newcastle’s absentees?

Everton arrive at St James’ Park tonight at a low ebb, winless in 12 Premier League matches and anxiously awaiting the fate of a proposed takeover by US investors 777 Partners. Sean Dyche’s team are just three points above Luton Town in the relegation zone and could yet face a second points deduction of the season for a separate breach of Profit and Sustainability rules.

That is the bad news. The good news, or sunnier outlook at least, is that without what eventually amounted to a six-point deduction, Everton would be safely ensconced in mid-table. They are the Premier League’s biggest under-performers of their expected goal numbers by a distance, suggesting chance creation and general performances have been better than their league position. Everton also have home fixtures against Burnley and Nottingham Forest upcoming.

Nor are they without a chance this evening, against an injury-hit Newcastle side. They will be buoyed by their 4-3 comeback victory against West Ham, but that game also exposed their ongoing defensive vulnerabilities. Newcastle lost Jamal Lascelles to a cruciate ligament injury, while Miguel Almiron, Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier are doubts for tonight’s game. Anthony Gordon is unable to face his former club due to suspension, having been sent off for two bookable offences against West Ham.

Newcastle will still have an eye on a European place, sitting five points behind Manchester United in sixth having played the same number of games. The two teams play at Old Trafford in a game that is yet to be rearranged and, given the performances of Erik ten Hag’s team, it feels possible for Newcastle to reel them in if they can find some consistency. Much will depend on the fitness of the outstanding Alexander Isak.
