Evans, Wolfard-Henry lead West Sound wrestlers at sub-regionals Saturday

Two West Sound girls got their hands on titles at Saturday’s sub-regional wrestling tournament at North Mason High School in Belfair, including one from the host team: Bulldogs junior Sadie Evans.

Evans, who began the winter on the mend from a concussion suffered during club wrestling season last summer, grabbed the 155-pound title with a 4-0 decision against Steilacoom’s Amina Thomas. The title helped the Bulldogs finish third in the team standings behind champion Orting and runner-up White River.

Evans’ goal is to make the finals at Mat Classic later this month after placing third as a sophomore.

Joining Evans at the top of the podium Saturday in the 170-pound bracket was Klahowya’s Linley Wolfard-Henry. The sophomore pinned Enumclaw’s Madison Cooper at 1:09 of the first round. Olympic junior Haley Schaser added a runner-up finish at 140 pounds, while Kingston's Hannah Weaver (125 pounds) and Olympic's Ashley Serrano (190 pounds) placed third.

At the South Puget Sound League girls tournament, South Kitsap placed eighth and came away with a pair of second-place finishes: Tayla Abundis at 115 pounds and Rosemary Brooks at 125 pounds.

Central Kitsap’s Deijah Diego placed third at 125 pounds in a sub-regional tournament at Prairie High School in Vancouver.

Vikings edge Trojans at Olympic League boys sub-regional

Olympic League 2A boys regular season champion North Kitsap won Saturday's sub-regional tournament at Sequim High School, but it was a close call. The Vikings totaled 327 points to finish four points ahead of runner-up Olympic. North Mason scored 178 points to place third, just ahead of Bremerton (176).

North Kitsap crowned seven champions overall: Wyatt Trogden (132), Dayton Heymann (138), Jaxon Johnson (144), Wyatt Sloman (150), Taylor Delmendo (165), Ben Gomez (175) and Zakaria Hammou (215). Three wrestlers claimed title for Olympic: Mason Manglona (126), Miles Brown (157) and Kevin Hudson (285). For Bremerton, Nolan Gregor (106), Anthony Murphy (120) and Lars Michaelson (190).

South Kitsap boys third at SPSL championships

Brennen Williams and Stone Hartford won titles for South Kitsap as the Wolves placed third at the South Puget Sound League 4A championships at Rogers High School in Puyallup.

Williams earned a forfeit victory in the finals at 126 pounds, while Hartford pinned Graham-Kapowsin's Myles McBeain in the 144-pound title match. Four Wolves placed second: Dylan Sternod at 106, Hayden Sternod at 113, Braden Shook at 150 and Chase Eaglin at 157.

Klahowya’s boys finished fourth at the West Central District 1A tournament with senior Deacon Wintch claiming top honors at 126 pounds. Four Eagles placed second: Wilson Zeigler at 106 pounds, Carson Wintch at 120, Reece Decourval at 144 and Sean Price at 150. ... Bainbridge's boys had two finalists at the Pierce County League 3A tournament and both prevailed: Wyatt Chabot at 157 pounds and Garrett Goade at 175 pounds. ... Central Kitsap's boys crowned a pair of champions at the South Sound Conference 3A sub-regional tournament with Carter Chadwick winning at 138 pounds and Keahi Bonsell winning at 157 pounds. Braden Turano was second at 165 and Nathan Cronin was third at 106.
